Definition and stakes

The Home Medical Library, Volume 2…

“ As the results of tuberculin injection in the consumptive are something like an attack of grippe, and as tuberculin is not wholly devoid of danger to these patients, this test should be reserved to the last, and is only to be used by a physician.
Treatment.—There is no special remedy at our disposal which will destroy or even hinder the growth of the germs of tuberculosis in the lungs. Our endeavors must consist in improving the patient's strength, weight, and vital resistance to the germs by proper feeding, and by means of a constant out-of-door life.

Portrait of Emil von Behring Emil von Behring,  The suppression of tuberculosis (1904)

“ This is manifested by a rise of temperature preceded by a sharp fall. I know, through personal experience, of a case of human tuberculosis in which more than a hundred times the usual diagnostic dose of tuberculin was administered. But aside from several days of high fever [Pg 22] and a considerable feeling of illness, it had no damaging influence on the patient’s general condition. Koch, the discoverer of tuberculin, once took a strong dose of tubercular poison in the form of dead tubercle bacilli and became very ill. ”

E. G. Hastings,  Outlines of dairy bacteriology…

“ Tuberculin, a product of the growth of the tubercle bacillus, when injected into the body causes a marked rise in temperature, in the case of an animal affected with the disease, and no such elevation in the case of a healthy animal. The process of preparing tuberculin makes it absolutely free from danger, so far as liability of producing the disease, or in any way injuring the animal, is concerned. ”
