Zygomatic bone

Portrait of Richard Owen Richard Owen,  The zoology of the voyage of H.M.S. Beagle… (1839)

“ The exterior line of the malo-maxillary suture defines the orbit anteriorly; but from this line the maxillary bone extends backwards, along the inner side of the malar portion of the zygoma, until it almost reaches the temporo-malar suture; thus abutting by an oblique surface against nearly the whole internal facet of the malar bone, and materially contributing to the general strength of the zygomatic arch. The malar bone is of considerable vertical extent, and presents a rugged and thickened inferior margin for the attachment of the masseter. ”

Portrait of William Berryman Scott William Berryman Scott,  A history of land mammals in the Western Hemisphere (1913)

“ For most of its length, the jugal projects freely outward from the side of the skull and extends posteriorly beneath a similar bar of bone, the zygomatic process of the squamosal. This process and the jugal together constitute the zygomatic arch, which on each side of the skull stands out more or less boldly, and the size and thickness of which are subject to great variation in [66] different mammals, the massiveness of the arch being proportional to the power of the jaws. One of the principal muscles of mastication (the masseter) is attached to the zygomatic arch. ”

Annette Fiske,  Structure and Functions of the Body

“ The squamous is the upper portion and has projecting from its lower part the long arched zygomatic process, which articulates with the malar bone of the face and from which arises the masseter muscle, one of the chief muscles of mastication, which has its insertion in the ramus and angle of the lower jaw. Just above the zygomatic process the temporal muscle has its origin in part, while below is the glenoid fossa for articulation with the condyle of the lower jaw, the posterior portion of the fossa being occupied by part of the parotid gland. ”
