“ PRAISE and glory be to Thee, O patient Jesus Christ, for the most sacred wound in Thy right foot; and by that adorable wound grant me grace to do penance for my sins. By Thy most pitiful death I devoutly beg of Thee to keep me, Thy poor servant, united night and day to Thy holy will, and to remove afar off every misfortune of body and soul. And when the day of wrath shall come, receive me into Thy mercy, and lead me to eternal happiness. Who livest and reignest forever and ever. ”

“ But I suppose our kneelers themselves will confess, that the elements come so betwixt God and them when they kneel, that they belong to the essence of the worship in hand, and that they would not, nor could not, worship the flesh and blood of Christ in the sacrament, if the elements were not before them. ”

“ We think of God, we remember Him, but He seems afar off. The evil which weighs us down—the pain of body, the agony of soul, the sadness and dejection of heart and mind, “the madness that worketh in the brain,” muffle the voice and all but still the trembling pulse, and we are not able so much as to lift our drooping heads and tear-dimmed eyes to see the gentle Shepherd standing faithfully at our side. ”

“ The connection between the action of speech and the accompanying and explaining action of look which is observable in all men, seemed lost in him. It was fearful to behold the death-like face, and to listen at the same moment to the living voice.
'Lo! the votaries come to the temple!' murmured the Pagan. 'The good servants of the mighty worship gather at the voice of the priest! In the far provinces, where the enemies of the gods approach to profane the sacred groves, behold the scattered people congregating by night to journey to the shrine of Serapis! ”

“ Of Thy Mystical Supper, O Son of God, accept me this day as a communicant; for I will not speak of Thy Mystery to Thine enemies, neither like Judas will I give Thee a kiss; but like the thief will I confess Thee: Remember me, O Lord, in Thy Kingdom.
And the following verses:
Be awed, O man, when you see the deifying Blood!
It is a fire which burns the unworthy!
The Divine Body both deifies and nourishes me.
[159] It deifies the spirit and wondrously nourishes the mind.
Then, the following Troparia:
With love hast Thou drawn me, O Christ, and with Thy divine love hast Thou changed me. ”

“ The wicked serpent, against whom was hurled the first curse, continues fiercely to attack and ensnare the unhappy children of Eve. Do thou, then, O Blessed Mother, our queen and advocate, who from the first instant of thy conception didst crush the head of the enemy, receive the prayers which, united with thee in our single heart, we implore thee to present at the throne of God, that we may never fall into the snares which are laid out for us, and may all arrive at the port of salvation ”

“ V. We beseech Thee therefore, help Thy servants, whom Thou hast redeemed with Thy Precious Blood.
Third Mystery
NEXT, in His cruel scourging, Jesus shed His Blood when His flesh was so torn that streams of blood flowed from every part of His body, all of which He offered all the time to His eternal Father in payment of our impatience and our softness. How comes it, then, that we do not curb our anger and love of self? Henceforth we will try our best to bear our troubles well, and, despising self, take peacefully the injuries which men may do us. ”

“ Allow me then to observe, that the eye of the body, like every other bodily sense, will require the watchfulness and control of some principle superior to itself, as a security against its exaltation to a pre-eminence, which, if not checked, may prove destructive, not only of your temporal, but your eternal interests and happiness. It is impossible, in the compass of a letter, to note all the instances, in which bodily vision may be thus your deceiver and betrayer ”

“ P. Callery, indeed, puts only the first paragraph within inverted commas, as if it alone were from the Khü Lî, and the rest of the Book were by a different hand. He translates the title by "Rites Divers," and to his first sentence, "Le Recueil des rites divers dit," appends the following note:—"This work, that for a very long time has been lost, was, so far as appears, one of those collections of proverbs and maxims with which philosophy has commenced among nearly all peoples. ”

“ O LORD God almighty, I pray Thee by the Precious Blood which Thy divine Son Jesus shed in His bitter crowning with thorns, deliver the souls in purgatory, and in particular that one among them all which would be the last to depart out of those pains, that It may not tarry so long a time before it comes to praise Thee in Thy glory and bless Thee forever. ”

“ XXXIII. A man in Lincolnshire, for every trifle used to swear by God's precious blood, and would not take warning from his friends, till at length falling into a grievous sickness, he was again much persuaded by his friends to repent, whose counsel he still rejected; and hearing the bell toll, in the very pains of death he started up, swearing, God's wounds! The bell tolls for me, but he shall not be me yet; whereupon the blood issued out in a most fearful manner from all the joints and parts of his body, his ears, mouth, nose, wrists, knees, heels, toes, and every where else ”

“ And first, in regard to the organ of hearing.
It is but too common a thing for men to suppose, that the bodily ear is what hears, whether in relation to the speech of man, or to the speech or word of GOD; whereas it must be plain to every reilecting person, that the bodily ear is only an instrument for the conveyance of sounds to some interior ear, and that therefore the term hearing will depend altogether on the state of this interior ear. As, for example:—You hear, with your bodily ear, a friend speak to you ”

“ So if this old man Heracles, the power of speech, draws men after him, tied to his tongue by their ears, you have no reason to wonder, as you must be aware of the close connection between the ears and the tongue. ”

“ Callous signifies a thickening of the outward skin of any particular part, especially on the hands and feet, by repeated exercise or use, through which such parts are rendered insensible. This may be metaphorically applied to the conscience of a sinner, which is rendered stupid and insensible by repeated acts of iniquity. ”

If, set upon Life's consecrated brows,

And I, unmindful of the inner plea,
No other interest than self espouse,

“ To these and their other virtues the Bishop of Chalons alluded in his late truly Gallican and Roman Catholic discourse. “The Bells,” said he, “placed like centinels on the towers, watch over us and turn away from us the temptations of the enemy of our salvation, as well as storms and tempests. They speak and pray for us in our troubles; they inform heaven of the necessities of the earth.” ”

“ Claude to Eustace,—from Rome.
Rome will not suit me, Eustace; the priests and soldiers possess it;
Priests and soldiers:—and, ah! which is the worst, the priest or the soldier?
Politics, farewell, however! For what could I do? with inquiring,
Talking, collating the journals, go fever my brain about things o’er
Which I can have no control. No, happen whatever may happen,
Time, I suppose, will subsist; the earth will revolve on its axis;
People will travel; the stranger will wander as now in the city ”

“ And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is placed among our members, which defileth the whole body, and inflameth the wheel of our nativity, being set on fire by hell. For every nature of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of the rest, is tamed, and hath been tamed, by the nature of man: But the tongue no man can tame, an unquiet evil, full of deadly poison. ”

“ When the physician placed his hand upon my head, as is the necessary formula to bring me into spiritual communion with my interrogator, I relapsed almost immediately into the syncope of the clairvoyant state, and of course became entirely unconscious of what I uttered in that condition. ”

“ The doctor ascertains the sin which has been committed, and the particular god which has been offended and inflicted the disease. Then he makes an image of the offended god, which he hangs on a pole and which is shot by three or four persons in rapid succession. As the image falls the spirit of the god which is in the doctor, leaps out, and falling upon the spirit represented by the image, kills it. ”

“ SILENUS.
The ARGUMENT.
Two young Shepherds Chromis and Mnasylus, having been often promis'd a Song by Silenus, chance to catch him asleep in this Pastoral; where they bind him hand and foot, and then claim his Promise. ”

“ They make me laugh, or lull me to sleep. Nor is this the case only, when I read the orations of Canutus [a] , Arrius, Furnius, Toranius and others of the same school, or rather, the same infirmary [b] ; an emaciated sickly race of orators; without sinew, colour, or proportion. But what shall be said of your admired Calvus [c] ? He, I think, has left no less than one and twenty volumes: in the whole collection, there is not more than one or two short orations, that can pretend to perfection in the kind. ”

“ The organs of speech, the outlets of sin, their tongue, shall consume away in their mouth, whereby God will reckon with them for all their blasphemies against himself and invectives against his people. Thus their own tongues shall fall upon them, and their punishment shall be legible in their sin, as his was whose tongue was tormented in hell-flames. ”
