Aunt Ruth

Definition and stakes

Various,  Harper's Young People, June 28…

“ Aunt Ruth lives in a big old-fashioned house in the country, at which her many nieces and nephews are always welcome, and all the country people adore her. Though there is so much of what papa calls personality about her, yet she never seems to be thinking of herself, i and one day when the girls and I were clustering about her in her own sitting-room, I exclaimed: "Aunt Ruth, do you ever think about yourself for one moment? You seem just made for other people." ”

“ Mary sat down in the swing, and Ruth pushed her from behind; and, after she had swung enough, Ruth took her to the barn. But here, I regret to say, the sight of a pile of hay on the barn-floor was too much for Niece Mary. She seemed to lose all her reverence at once.
Seizing Aunt Ruth, she threw her on the hay, and covered her up with it, crying out, "You precious little aunty, I must have a frolic, or I shall die. So forget that you are an aunt, and try to remember that you are nothing, after all, but a darling little girl."

“ It is maddening to be frozen and pitied, so I answered recklessly,
“‘But think of the fun you miss when you’re non-excitable, Aunt Ruth. There is nothing more wonderful than dancing around a blazing fire. What matter if it end in ashes?’
“‘When you are as old as I am,’ said Aunt Ruth, ‘you will have more sense than to go into ecstasies over white fogs.’
“It seems to me impossible that I shall either grow old or die. I know I will, of course, but I don’t believe it. I didn’t make any answer to Aunt Ruth, so she started on another tack.
“‘I was watching Ilse go past.
