Divine Name

Definition and stakes

Rev. James Fitton,  St. Joseph's manual (1877)

“ O most adorable Saviour Jesus Christ, open thou my heart and my lips to praise and glorify thy holy name, which above all names is blessed. Purify my soul from all evil and perverse thoughts, that my lips may continually bless thee, and my life glorify thee; and, since through thy goodness I have been created to the praise and glory of thy holy name, grant, I beseech thee, that in the sight of thy divine majesty I may faithfully serve thee here, and eternally rejoice with thee hereafter, who, with the Father and the Holy Ghost, livest and reignest, one God, world without end. ”

J. D. Jones,  The model prayer (1919)

“ Before the prayer for daily bread, for forgiveness, for deliverance, comes the prayer that God may have the glory due unto His name. My object this morning is to point out, if I can, the sweep and grandeur 47of this petition, so that we may understand what it is we pray for when we say, “Hallowed be Thy name.” Let me first of all try to explain what is meant by the name of God. As Bishop Westcott points out in his “Revelation of the Father” no thoughtful person can read the Bible without being struck by the importance which is attached to the Divine names in the different books. ”

Portrait of F. Max Müller F. Max Müller,  Chips from a German Workshop, Volume 1

“ Something divine was discovered in everything that moved and lived. Names were stammered forth in anxious haste, and no single name could fully express what lay hidden in the human mind and wanted expression—the idea of an absolute, and perfect, and supreme, and immortal Essence. Thus a countless host of nominal gods was called into being, and for a time seemed to satisfy the wants of a thoughtless multitude. ”
