“ Petrie, will appreciate. In the event of clumsy surgery, death may supervene; failing this, permanent hemiplegia—or"—the film lifted from the green eyes, and for a moment they flickered with transient horror—"idiocy! Any one of three of my pupils whom I might name could perform this operation with ease, but their services are not available. Only one English surgeon occurred to me in this connection, and you, Sir Baldwin"—again he slowly turned his head— "were he. Dr. Petrie will act as anaesthetist, and, your duties completed, you shall return to your home richer by the amount stipulated. ”

Portrait of Leslie Stephen Leslie Stephen,  Dictionary of National Biography… (1896)

“ Petrie died in September 1662. He was highly esteemed by his fellow-citizens and by the Dutch clergy, and the congregation largely increased during his ministry. There is a portrait of Petrie in possession of the consistory, of which an engraving is given in Stevens's ‘History of the Scottish Church, Rotterdam.’ It is a face indicative of sagacity and force of character, and does not belie the reputation Petrie had of possessing a somewhat hasty temper. ”

“ He had no doubt of Petrie's standing and the bonds were gilt-edged.
Jimmy had been gone about ten minutes when a man burst wildly into the office.
"Goodel, about those bonds. Petrie's a sharper. We just found it out."
"Great Heavens! Mathias," Goodel cried. "The boy is down there now with the check. He's given it to Petrie by this."
He rose and grabbed his hat.
"Let's go down there and see if we can intercept the scoundrel. "
He sprang for the office door and caught an elevator on the run.
In the meantime Jimmy had entered Petrie's luxurious office and was met by Petrie himself.
