H. J. L. Beadnell,  The topography and geology of the Fayum province of Egypt

“ The easterly and central part of the cultivated area forms a more or less level table-land, from which the ground slopes gently away, especially on the north side, where the slope is towards the lake and very marked. The cultivated land of the Fayûm is directly connected with that of the Nile Valley by a narrow strip of low ground, a natural passage through the desert separating the Nile Valley and the depression of the Fayûm. Through this gap runs the natural canal known as the Bahr Yusef, which is practically the sole source of water in the Fayûm and irrigates the entire district. ”

“ Fay. As she sailed southward with her husband in the pleasant autumn weather, her thoughts dwelt on the past with irritation, on the future with hope, but on the scenery scarcely at all. What with the boredom of Alexandria, what with her fright at Cairo, what with the native dress that fanaticism had compelled her to wear (“a terrible fashion for one like me to whom fresh air seems the greatest requisite for existence”) , and finally what with Suez, which she found “a miserable place little better than the desert which it bounds,” she quitted Egypt without one tender word. ”

Portrait of Robert Hichens Robert Hichens,  Bella Donna: A Novel

“ The Fayyūm is a great and superb oasis situated upon a plateau of the desert of Libya, wonderfully fertile, rich, and bland, with a splendid climate, and springs of sweet waters which, carefully directed into a network of channels, spreading like wrinkles over the face of the land, carry life and a smiling of joy through the crowding palms, the olive and fruit trees, the corn and the brakes of the sugar-cane. The Egyptians often call it "the country of the roses," and they say that everything grows there. The fellah thinks of it as of a Paradise where man can only be happy. ”
