Faust

Portrait of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Johann Wolfgang von Goethe,  Faust: a Tragedy [part 1], Translated from the German of Goethe

“ Faust. And in return what service shall I render?
Mephistopheles. There's ample grace—no hurry, not the least.
Faust. No, no, the devil is an egotist,
And does not easily "for God's sake" tender
That which a neighbor may assist.
Speak plainly the conditions, come!
'Tis dangerous taking such a servant home.
Mephistopheles. I to thy service here agree to bind me,
To run and never rest at call of thee;
When over yonder thou shalt find me,
Then thou shalt do as much for me.
Faust. I care not much what's over yonder:
When thou hast knocked this world asunder,
Come if it will the other may!

Portrait of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Johann Wolfgang von Goethe,  Faust: a Tragedy [part 1], Translated from the German of Goethe

“ Where art thou, Faust? whose voice rang through my ear,
Whose mighty yearning drew me from my sphere?
Is this thing thou? that, blasted by my breath,
Through all life's windings shuddereth,
A shrinking, cringing, writhing worm!
Faust. Thee, flame-born creature, shall I fear? 'Tis I, 'tis Faust, behold thy peer!
Spirit. In life's tide currents, in action's storm,
Up and down, like a wave,
Like the wind I sweep!

H. B. Cotterill,  The Faust-Legend and Goethe's 'Faust'

“ Faust defies the phantom. She, standing there invisible, recites in tones like the knell of a passing-bell the fate of a man haunted by Care: how he gradually loses sight of his high ideals and wanders blindly amid the maze of worldly illusions—how he loses faith and joy—how he starves amidst plenty—has no certain aim in life—burdening himself and others, breathing air that chokes him, living a phantom life—a dead thing, a death-in-life—supporting himself on a hope that is no hope, but despair—never content, never resigned, never knowing what he should do, or what he himself wishes. ”
