Portrait of Leslie Stephen Leslie Stephen,  Dictionary of National Biography… (1899)

“ Webb was an observer of great ability. He took a special interest in the study of the moon, was a member of the moon committee of the British Association, and an active supporter of the now defunct Selenographical Society. After his father's death he finished editing the ‘Military Memoirs of Colonel John Birch,’ for the Camden Society, and in 1879 published a new and enlarged edition of John Webb's ‘Civil War in Herefordshire.’ In 1882 he became prebendary of Hereford Cathedral. On the death of Sir Henry Webb, seventh baronet, of Odstock, Wiltshire, he succeeded in 1874 as head of that family. ”

“ Somersetshire. BARWICK. Sarah Higmore, æt. 6.
Ye modern fair, who’er you be,
This Truth we can aver:
A lesson of humility
You all may learn from her.
She had what none of you can boast,
With all your Wit and Sense—
She had what you, alas! have lost,
And that was—Innocence.

Death, traversing the western road,
And asking where true merit lay,
Made in this town a short abode,
And took this worthy man away.
YEOVIL. John Webb,
Son of John and Mary Webb, Clothiers, who died of the
measles, May 3d, 1646, aged 3 years.
How still he lies!

Will N. Harben,  The Desired Woman

“ John Webb drawled out, in his slow fashion. "I can set an' study a town dude like him by the hour an' never git tired. I never kin somehow git at what sech fellers think about or do when they are at home. He makes money, but how? His hands are as soft an' white as a woman's. His socks are as thin an' flimsy as spider-webs. He had six pairs o' pants, if he had one, an' a pair o' galluses to each pair. ”
