Liberty Loan

Definition and stakes

Portrait of Theodore Roosevelt Theodore Roosevelt,  Roosevelt in the Kansas City Star… (1917)

“ Let us, as part payment of our great debt, subscribe and oversubscribe to the bonds of the Fourth Liberty Loan. This is a service which lies within the ability of the poorest of us. It is the duty and privilege of every right American. Every dollar put into Liberty loans is a dollar working for the downfall of the system of greed and treachery, of tyranny and callous brutality which has drenched the world in blood.
Americans are not quitters. The Kaiser’s troops cannot stop our men at the front.

Richard Purdy,  The Third Liberty Loan (1918)

“ In the great Third Liberty Loan drive, just one statement seems necessary before an American audience. It is simply a question now of the survival of autocracy or democracy. They are in their death grapple. It is a fight to the finish and it is up to us. All the evidences about the city advertising this great loan, and the many speakers that appear before you, do so at the request of the government to thoroughly acquaint the American public with the situation. ”
