Puruṣa

Definition and stakes

The Rig Veda (1896)

“ A THOUSAND heads hath Purusa, a thousand eyes, a thousand feet. On every side pervading earth he fills a space ten fingers wide. 2. This Purusa is all that yet hath been and all that is to be; The Lord of Immortality which waxes greater still by food. 3. So mighty is his greatness; yea, greater than this is Purusa. All creatures are one-fourth of him, three-fourths eternal life in heaven. 4. With three-fourths Purusa went up: one fourth of him again was here. Thence he strode out to every side over what cats not and what cats. 5. From him Viraj was born; again Purusa from Viraj was born. ”

A Prose English Translation of Vishnupuranam

“ Dhruva said,—"I bow unto Him whose forms are earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intellect, the first element, primæval nature, and the pure, subtle, all-pervading soul that excels nature. Salutation unto that Purusha who is devoid of qualities, pure, subtle, extending all over the earth, and who is separate from Prakriti; who is supreme over all elements, all objects of sense, intellect and who is separate even from Purusha. I seek refuge unto him, who is one with Brahmā, who is the soul of the whole universe, pure, and who is the foremost of all gods. ”

Portrait of Aurobindo Ghose Aurobindo Ghose,  Essays On The Gita (1922)

“ It descends into the lower nature and thinks itself bound by action, so to enjoy the lower being: it can draw back and know itself as the passive Purusha free from all action. It can rise above the three gunas and, liberated from the bondage of action, yet possess action, even as I do myself, and by adoration of the Purushottama and union with him it can enjoy wholly its divine nature. ”
