Tycho Crater

Definition and stakes

Stephen Marlowe,  Revolt of the Outworlds

“ Ahead loomed the central mountains of Tycho crater, biting into the black sky, saw-toothed, for fifteen thousand feet. On labored the moon tank, climbing now, its old engine whining a protest against the steep grade, the sound echoing strangely inside the vehicle because outside in the luna vacuum it could not be heard at all. They crossed the first peak of the range, looked down on a great cauldron in the rock, a crater within the crater, a mile across. ”

Thomas Gwyn Elger,  The moon

“ That the Tycho streaks do not radiate from the apparent centre of this formation, but point towards a multitude of minute craterlets on its south-eastern or northern rims. Similar craterlets occur on the rims of other great craters, forming ray-centres. (2.) Speaking generally, a very minute and brilliant crater is located at the end of the streak nearest the radiant point, the streak spreading out and becoming fainter towards the other end. The majority of the streaks appear to issue from one or more of these minute craters, which rarely exceed a mile in diameter. ”

Portrait of Jules Verne Jules Verne,  From the Earth to the Moon, Direct in Ninety-Seven Hours and Twenty Minutes…

“ Tycho belongs to the system of radiating mountains, like Aristarchus and Copernicus; but it is of all the most complete and decided, showing unquestionably the frightful volcanic action to which the formation of the moon is due. Tycho is situated in 43° south lat., and 12° east long. Its centre is occupied by a crater fifty miles broad. It assumes a slightly elliptical form, and is surrounded by an enclosure of annular ramparts, which on the east and west overlook the outer plain from a height of 15,000 feet. ”
