Bowel movement

Definition and stakes

Lena K. Sadler,  The Mother and Her Child

“ The periodicity of the bowel movement (at definite times each day) is a matter of great importance. Immediately after a meal, if the child is old enough, he should be placed on the toilet chair. A bit of cotton, well anointed with vaseline and inserted into the rectum just before meals, will often aid in producing a bowel movement shortly after the meal has been taken.
Abdominal massage should be administered in all instances of constipation, beginning with light movements and gradually increasing, with well-oiled hands.

“ In other words, you should feel that the colon has been evacuated thoroughly. Many who have regular bowel movements do not have this satisfying sensation afterwards. When the movement is satisfactory in every way little or no straining is necessary. The colon simply empties itself thoroughly, and the evacuation is then complete. However, few have movements of the bowels that are satisfactory to this extent. There should be at least one bowel movement of this kind each day. ”

“ The necessity of this artificial aid to natural bowel movement is thus apparent. At the beginning of the fast, peristaltic action, in the absence of fresh supplies of food, becomes sluggish, and absorption proceeds through the walls of the intestines irrespective of the material present. The fluid state of the waste thrown into the bowels when the process of digestion is suspended, permits of easy absorption and of consequent septic poisoning. ”
