Cod liver oil

Definition and stakes

The Home Medical Library, Volume 2…

“ In certain conditions cod-liver oil is one of the most valuable remedies known. As a concentrated and reconstructive food in many wasting diseases it is of great service. Weak and puny children, and all suffering from malnutrition may take it with benefit. It does help produce flesh, increase strength, and add to the body's resisting powers. It does not contain any medicinal properties, and its virtue is largely in its fat or oil, but as an aid to other remedies, or alone, when increased nutrition is desired, it is a reliable and helpful remedy. ”

John Brown,  Health: Five Lay Sermons to Working-People

“ You often hear of the wonders of cod-liver oil, and they are wonders; poor little wretches who have faces like old puggies, and are all belly and no legs, and are screaming all day and all night too,—these poor little wretches under the cod-liver oil, get sonsy, and rosy, and fat, and happy, and strong. Now, this is greatly because the cod-liver oil is capital food. If you can't afford to get cod-liver oil for delicate children, or if they reject it, give them plain olive oil, a tablespoonful twice a day, and take one to yourself, and you will be astonished how you will both of you thrive. ”

Council on Pharmacy and Chemistry,  The Propaganda for Reform in Proprietary Medicines…

“ At first sight one might question whether a cod liver oil product which contains absolutely no cod liver oil had not suffered the loss of essential elements. But a closer reading discloses a significant qualification, namely, the phrase, ‘those elements which make the crude oil such a high-class reconstructive.’
“The boost is misleading from beginning to end. The manufacturers have not succeeded in this preparation in ‘making cod liver oil palatable,’ nor does their preparation in any way possess the virtues of cod liver oil.
