Definition and stakes

Sir Robert Christison,  Treatise on Poisons

“ In the second variety of the second degree of intoxication, an apoplectic disposition is called into action by the excited state of the circulating system; and death ensues from apoplexy or some other disease of the brain, rather than from simple poisoning. Thus in some instances, as will be more fully mentioned under the head of the morbid appearances, extravasation of blood is found within the head after death, preceded by the usual phenomena of ordinary intoxication. ”

“ It is very difficult to prove definitely by experiments, that there really exists such a condition as auto-intoxication; but, practically, its existence cannot be denied. We note after changes in the above-named organs, when their functions are in abeyance, signs of intoxication in a patient, which include headaches and other nervous symptoms, with a haggard and colorless face. After a good movement of the bowels, perspiration, and abundant diuresis, we see a great change for the better. ”

Charles Barnes Towns,  Habits that Handicap: The Menace of Opium…

“ In such a case the symptoms of insanity may be attributed to auto-intoxication, coming from any one of many causes, of which alcohol, tobacco, or even food improperly selected or unreasonably eaten may be one. The physician can have no means of learning just what method to pursue in any case of auto-intoxication until the patient has been unpoisoned. ”
