Mind cure

“ Christian Science silences human will, quiets fear with Truth and Love, and illustrates the unlabored motion Divine energy of the divine energy in healing the sick. Self-seeking, envy, passion, pride, hatred, and revenge are cast out by the divine Mind which heals disease. The human will which maketh and worketh a lie, hiding the divine Principle of harmony, is destructive to health, and is the cause of disease rather than its cure. ”

“ The cure must come by and through the individual possessing the nerves, and by and through the individual's power of will and mastery of the mind.
Get the mental equipment right. Let the mind master the body. Let the nerve sufferer get hold [Pg 36] of himself and fill his brain with faith-thought instead of fear-thought, with courage instead of cowardice, with strength instead of weakness, with hope instead of despair, with smiles instead of frowns, with occupation instead of sluggishness, and wonders will appear. ”

“ When I learned of a verity that Mind, and not matter, effects the cure, I had such qualms of conscience over attributing the cure to matter that I gave up a respectable profession, and heard the soft impeachment that I had lost my wits, or become a Spiritualist — which seems to me much the same thing. ”

“ Explain audibly to your patient (as soon as he can bear it) the utter control that Mind holds over the body. Show him how mortal mind induces disease by certain fears and false conclusions, and how Mind can cure by opposite thoughts. Give him an underlying understanding to support him, and shield him against the baneful effects of his own beliefs. Show him that the conquest over sickness, as well as over sin, depends on mentally destroying the effects of error. ”

Then, if one is sick, why treat the body alone, while we administer a dose of despair to the mind? Why declare that the body is diseased, and picture this disease to the mind, rolling it under the tongue as a sweet morsel, and holding it before the thought of both physician and patient? We should understand that the cause of disease rests in the mortal human mind, and its cure with the immortal divine Mind. ”

“ Have they faith? There is curative power in faith. It is half gained to have the sick confident that they will recover; and the belief that they will be sustained by certain means often has more influence than the means.
The Mental Cure asserts the superiority of the mind over the body, as a scientific fact, without appeal to God or faith. In vital essence, in making the body the servant of the mind, all these systems are identical. Christian Metaphysics and Christian Science, a difference of name, and mental cure, mind cure, etc., have the same basis. ”

“ The fact that all the schools make cures, in about the same proportion, and of the same general classes of complaints, would seem to show that the theories and dogmas have nothing to do with the process of cure—and that the healing is done in spite of the theories, rather than because of them. ”

“ Such practices as these do nut constitute the Science whereby the Divine Mind heals the sick. If certain cases seem to improve under such treatment, they will relapse, and become more difficult to cure than they were at first. ”

And she also defines carefully the difference in the theories between faith cure and Christian Science, dwelling particularly upon the terms belief and understanding, which are the key words respectively used in the definitions of these two healing arts. ”

“ Christian Science ranges itself with the various theories of psycho-therapy that have been advanced from time to time, but its effect in the treatment of disease is of worth only as regards the suggestive power of mind over matter. ”

“ As long as there remains a particle of faith in the medicine bottle, the knife or the metaphysical formula of the mind healer, people prefer these easy methods, which require no effort on their part, to the Nature Cure treatment, which necessitates personal exertion, self-control, the changing or giving up of cherished habits. ”

It is a subject that I approach with hesitation because of the danger of misunderstanding. No subject is more difficult and none is more important for the invalid to understand. We hear a great deal about the wonderful cures of Christian Science or of similar agencies, and we all know of people who have been restored to usefulness by such means. Has the healing of Christ again become possible on earth? ”

“ We hear a great deal in these days about mind cures, and rest cures, and faith cures, and cures by hypnotism, and cures by patent medicines. If anybody needs these cures, of course he is welcome to them ”

“ The contest for the recovery of the sick goes on between minds, not between bodies. The victory will be on the doctor's side, only as he subdues the beliefs in disease, through whatever method he may adopt, — whether it be faith in drugs, in hygiene, in prayer, or in some minor curative.
There are really but two modes of practice; one is quackery, the other is Science. To heal the sick we must be familiar with the great verities of being. Mind is immortal. ”

“ The silence of Christian Science and Love is eloquent. It is powerful to unclasp the hold of disease, and reduce its cause to nothingness.
To prevent disease or to cure it mentally, let Spirit destroy this dream of sense. If you wish to heal by Insistence. argument, find the type of the ailment, get its name, and array your mental plea against the physical. Argue with the patient (mentally, not audibly) that he has no disease, and conform the argument to the evidence. Mentally insist that health is the everlasting fact, and sickness the temporal falsity. ”

“ Christian Science, Divine Healing, or Mental Science do not, and never can in the very nature of things, cure all diseases; nevertheless, the practical applications of the general principles of the broadest mental science will tend to prevent disease.... We do find sufficient evidence to convince us that the proper reform in mental attitude would relieve many a sufferer of ills that the ordinary physician cannot touch ”

“ We classify disease as error, which nothing but Truth, or Mind, can heal; and this Mind must be divine, not human. Mind transcends all other power, and will ultimately supersede all other means in healing. In order to heal by Science, you must not be ignorant of its moral and spiritual demands, nor disobey them. Moral ignorance, or sin, affects your demonstration, and hinders its approach to the standard in Christian Science. ”

“ And if you will say that you might not do them, have we not then very just cause to mistrust those medicines and remedies with which in your letters you go about to heal our conscience, especially in that we may perceive and see those remedies to be prepared for us, not to relieve the sickness and disease of our mind, but for other means, pleasures and worldly respects? And as it should seem profitable that we should ever continue in hope or despair, so always the remedy is attempted; so that we being always a-healing, and never healed, should be sick still. ”

“ God has managed, and perpetually manages, to insert into our nature a tendency toward health, and against the unnatural condition which we call disease. When our flesh receives a wound, a strange nursing and healing process is immediately commenced to repair the injury. So in all diseases, organic or functional, this mysterious healing power sets itself to work at once to triumph over the morbid condition.... Cannot this healing process be greatly accelerated by a voluntary and conscious action of the mind, assisted, if need be, by some other person? ”

Whenever men have believed deeply and with conviction that some other being {78} was able to help them, many of their ills, or at least the conditions from which they suffered severely, have dropped from them and their complaints, real or imaginary have disappeared. ”

“ The relation of Truth to man, improving him physically and morally, we have stated as we discovered it, and submit our statement to proof. Having first convinced ourself through demonstration of the Principle of our discovery and its ability to heal the sick and bring out the harmony of being, we deem it worthy the name of science. Healing disease on this basis, we learned beyond a doubt, that mind governs the body and is more potent than matter to heal the sick. ”

“ On the other hand, mental cure is superior to all methods of physical cure because will, imagination, faith, etc., are the different phases of consciousness which actually and directtly act from within and are the motive powers that stimulate and direct the Life Energy to accomplish any definite task. ”

The Man of Sorrows best understood the nothingness of material life and intelligence, and the mighty actuality of all-inclusive Mind. These are the two cardinal points of Mind-healing, or Christian Science. ”

“ Science reveals the origin of all disease as wholly mental. It declares that all disease is cured by Mind, however much we trust the drug, or any other medium to which faith is directed. It is Mind, not matter, that heals the sick. You should heal the sick by means of divine power. The action of Truth restores harmony. Metaphysical healing enables one to heal the absent as well as the present. The spiritual capacity to apprehend thought is gained only when man is found not wearing his own righteousness, but reflecting the divine nature. ”

“ Ignorance of the cause of disease can neither remove that cause nor its effect.
I endeavor to accommodate my instructions to the present capability of the learner, and to support the liberated thought until its altitude reaches beyond the mere alphabet of Mind-healing. Above physical wants, lie the higher claims of the law and gospel of healing. ”

“ The answer involves my first discovery, the discovery that enabled me to give a demonstration of Christian Science, or healing through Mind, the method whereof is described in the chapter on Healing and Teaching.
Mind must be found superior to all the beliefs of the five personal senses, and able to destroy all the ills “that flesh is heir to.”
I learned that sickness is an illusion, to be annihilated by Science; that disease is a suffering of mortal mind. Disease is fear made manifest on the body, whether this fear take the form of cancer, consumption, small-pox, or an injured limb. ”
