Satyriasis

Definition and stakes

J. T. Kent,  Sexual Neuroses

“ Satyriasis.—Not the female only, suffers from an ungovernable venereal desire, but the male also is, at times, the subject of a disease, analogous to nymphomania of the female. Such is the disease termed satyriasis. A young married man says to me, in the following forcible language, “My penis is stiff all night. I can’t let my wife rest, and she is nearly dead, and I am tired out myself; but as soon as I see a woman, my penis rears up like the proud standard of Wellington. ”

L. Deslandes,  A Treatise on the Diseases Produced By Onanism…

“ If satyriasis and nymphomania have been regarded as rare diseases, it is only because the meaning of these terms has been too confined to embrace numerous cases which, however, have the greatest analogy with those diseases to which these terms are applied. Generally, these persons are considered as affected with satyriasis and nymphomania, who are irresistibly impelled to coition, and resort, to satisfy their desires, to the most indecent actions, and to the most direct provocations. ”

Portrait of Wilhelm Stekel Wilhelm Stekel,  Bi-sexual love; the homosexual neurosis

“ Here the instinct is not brought into play, the excited organ requires nothing,—it is merely unwell. The psychic impulse is entirely lacking. The subjects feel their condition as something painfully unpleasant, they cohabit merely to get rid of the troublesome erection. On the other hand, the victim of satyriasis is continually impelled to seek gratification and it often happens that he is unable to carry on intercourse because erection fails him. The impulse is psychic rather than physical. Satyriasis is an attempt to exhaust a psychic impulse through the physical channel. ”
