“ CHAPTER VII. HEAT—WHAT IT IS—THEORY OF HEAT—THE THERMOMETER—EXPANSION BY HEAT—EBULLITION AND DISTILLATION—LATENT HEAT—SPECIFIC HEAT.
What is Heat?—We will consider this question, and endeavour to explain it before we speak of its effects on water and other matter.
Heat is now believed to be the effects of the rapid motion of all the particles of a body. It is quite certain that a heated body is no heavier than the same body before it was made “hot,” so the heat could not have gone into it, nor does the “heat” leave it when it has become what we call “cold,” which is a relative term.

“ Note C.—We see no reason for admitting, à priori the constancy of the specific heat of bodies at different temperatures, that is, to admit that equal quantities of heat will produce equal increments of temperature, when this body changes neither its state nor its density; when, for example, it is an elastic fluid enclosed in a fixed space. Direct experiments on solid and liquid bodies have proved that between zero and 100°, equal increments in the quantities of heat would produce nearly equal increments of temperature. ”

“ The specific influences of carbon dioxide and water vapour are less than those of the liquid particles (and of cloud and rains) and of the great mass of oxygen and nitrogen that make up the atmosphere.
Specific Heat.–The capacity of dry air for heat varies according as the heat increases the volume of the air expanding under constant pressure, or the pressure of the air confined in constant volume. The specific heat under constant pressure is about 1·4025 times the specific heat under constant volume.
