Sukkah

Definition and stakes

Yosef Karo,  Translation:Shulchan Aruch — Orach Chaim 638…

“ We do not benefit from them for other things for all eight days because on the seventh day the sukkah itself is entirely muktzeh until twilight, and since it is muktzeh for twilight it is muktzeh for the whole [eighth] day. Rem"a: Even if the sukkah fell over, it is forbidden, and a condition [that it will be permitted if it falls] is not effective (Tur) . But wood that leans on the sukkah is permitted [to be used] , see 518:8. And if after the minimum requirement for the size of the walls is met and the valid sukkah is complete, one adds a wall, it is not forbidden. ”

Yosef Karo,  Translation:Shulchan Aruch — Orach Chaim 639…

“ A dish made of the five species [of grain] , if they are made into a meal, they are considered a proper meal and require a sukkah. Rem"a: Concerning the practice nowadays to be lenient with respect to sleeping, where only the scrupulously observant sleep in the sukkah, there are those who say that it is because of the cold, for it is uncomfortable to sleep in cold places (Mordechai ch. "Hayashen") . It seems to me that this is because the mitzvah of sukkah applies to a man and his household, a man and his wife, similar to the way he lives the rest of the year. ”

Yosef Karo,  Translation:Shulchan Aruch — Orach Chaim 636…

“ An old sukkah — that is, one that was made more than thirty days before the holiday — is valid provided something new was done to it for the sake of the festival. For this, even a handbreadth by a handbreadth [of schach] is sufficient if it is in one place. If the new thing goes across the whole sukkah, even a little bit is sufficient. ”
