“ Neuralgia in a sensory nerve can produce paralysis of muscles supplied by motor fibres bound up with the painful branch, or with another branch of the same nerve, or in muscles supplied by a totally distinct nerve connected only through the centre. ”

“ This change, as I have seen in my practice of medicine, passes up the nerves towards the centres, and occasions a more or less constant irritation of the nerve-fibres, producing neuralgia, which is usually referred to that part of the lost limb to which the affected nerve belongs. This pain keeps the brain ever mindful of the missing part, and, imperfectly at least, preserves to the man a consciousness of possessing that which he has not. ”

“ How often we hear that and how little does the person with steady nerves appreciate the tortures of "nerves."
A cut, a bruise, a headache, or any of the physical ailments can be quickly cured. Nature will mend the break, but tired, worn, stretched, abused nerves take time to restore. These nerve ailments call for most vigorous mental treatment.
Neurasthenia means debilitated or prostrated nerves and it shows itself first of all by worry. Worry means the inability to relax the attention from a definite fear or fancied hard luck. Worry leads to many physical and mental disorders. ”

“ When the nerve roots alone are injured, sensory phenomena predominate. Formication, radiating pains, and neuralgia are present in the area of distribution of the nerves implicated. There is motor paresis or paralysis, which may disappear either suddenly or gradually, or may persist and be followed by atrophy of the muscles concerned. ”

“ Alterations of sensibility occurring in well-defined areas of the hand, trunk, or extremities, corresponding to the known distribution of nerves, almost always indicates disease of the nerve itself, much more rarely disease in the spinal cord at the origin of the nerve. ”

“ We must not assume, however, because we see nothing following the irritation of a nerve, that nothing happens. There may be changes in the nerve for all we know to the contrary, and the fact that changes do occur in the nerve would be evident if the nerve had still been connected with a muscle, because then, as you now know, irritation of the nerve would have been followed by contraction of the muscle. ”

“ And certainly it is infinitely more probable that paralysis or spasm of a muscular viscus should occur as a reflex consequence of neuralgia occurring in a nerve whose central nucleus was closely connected with the motor centre of the organ, than that mere paralysis of the viscus should convey a reflex impression to sensitive nerves which should express itself in the form of acute pain. It must be confessed that the matter hangs in doubt; but the evidence is, on the whole, very strong for the belief that central nervous mischief is the most important element in angina. ”

“ Mechanical stimuli, blows, concussions, pressure, traction, etc., excite the nerves, causing sensations when applied to sensitive nerves, or contraction of muscles when applied to motor nerves. When mechanical stimuli are pushed farther, the irritability of the nerves may be destroyed. The gradual application of mechanical stimuli may destroy the irritability of nerve-fibres without any exhibition of excitation, as in paralysis from pressure. In nerve-stretching it is probable that many of the results depend upon the mechanical stimulation of the nerve-fibres by the traction. ”

"Only your nerves." I cannot understand why the word, only, is used. It makes it appear that nerves are of minor importance.
Nerves are less understood than anything in the human anatomy.
Experience has proved that nerves cannot be restored by dope, patent medicines, tonics or prescriptions. ”

“ But, the only evidence that they afford as to the situation of the mischief is, that they uniformly point to the central end of a particular nerve; and accordingly I have already shown, in the chapter on Pathology, that the attentive study of these very complications furnishes us with some of the most powerful arguments upon which rests my theory that in neuralgia there is always centric mischief. ”

“ According to our investigation the nerves of the extremities are affected throughout their whole length, but the affection is severe only at certain places, viz., where the nerves run superficially over bones or joints, as the median at the wrist, the ulnar at the elbow, and the peroneal where it crosses the fibula. As a result of this nerve affection we have pain followed by anæsthesia. The pains in the arms, hands, feet and calves are sometimes very severe and persistent. The affection at first causes pain, by pressure on the nerves, and later—when the pressure has led to atrophy—anæsthesia. ”

“ Prolonged and excessive nervous action is attended with too great a rush of blood to the nerve-centers, which can [pg 917] only be relieved by increasing the flow in the muscles. Congestion, or hyperæmia, in the spinal cord or brain, or both, is a condition ever present in neuralgia. The application of motion through the manipulator causes the blood to flow to the muscles, thus relieving nervous congestion and consequent neuralgia.
CURE OF PARALYSIS.
In no single disease has the transmission of motion through the Manipulator proved more thoroughly efficacious than in paralysis. ”

“ If the nerve in a limb of a living animal be laid bare, and irritated by pinching, galvanizing, or the like, two results follow, namely: the animal experiences a sensation, that of pain, in the part to which the nerve is distributed, and the limb is thrown into convulsive action. When a nerve in a human body is cut by accident, or destroyed by disease, the part in which it ramifies loses both sensation and power of motion ”
