Catheter

Definition and stakes

W. Grant Hague,  The Eugenic Marriage, Volume 4…

“ Place the rubber catheter over this nozzle, lubricate the catheter, place the child on its back over a douche pan, insert the catheter about two inches, let the water run and as it runs in push the catheter up gently until it is all in the bowel except the end on the douche tip. The object of letting the water run while pushing in the catheter is because it floats up with the water as it distends the bowel; there is no risk then of pushing the end into the intestinal wall or hurting the child. ”

“ A small catheter attached by means of a connecting glass nozzle to the tubing on the irrigation bag may be passed into a slightly larger catheter, which is inserted into the rectum about six inches, the fluid flowing in through the small inner tube and out through the larger one which encases it. Or a small catheter for the outflow may be inserted in the rectum alongside the one through which the solution is introduced. Normal salt solution, glucose or bicarbonate of sodium solution are sometimes given by the drip method at the rate of 20 to 40 drops per minute. ”

James Law,  Text book of veterinary medicine… (1902)

“ The penis being withdrawn from the sheath, the catheter containing its stilet is introduced into the urethra and pushed on slowly and carefully until its point can be felt over the ischiatic arch. The stilet is now drawn out a few inches and the point of the catheter is bent forward over the ischium by the finger. The stilet is further drawn out and the catheter can easily be pressed on into the bladder. If any difficulty is experienced it may be guided by the hand introduced into the rectum. ”
