Portrait of Mrs. Aria Mrs. Aria,  Costume: Fanciful, Historical and Theatrical

“ As a rule, it must be admitted that the finest fancy dress looks the best, and however charming may be the effects arrived at with muslin, cotton, crêpe, and calico, she who stands out in the vast crowd will be she who has the most magnificent clothes. The glories of brocade and satin and velvet will always hold supreme sway, allied to some distinctively grand head-dress elevated from the head on a frame and banded with jewels, with a long diaphanous veil flowing into a sumptuous length of train. ”

Ardern Holt,  Fancy dresses described (1887)

“ For girls, narrow skirts with one deep flounce and puffings, showing the sandalled shoes; very short waists; turn-down frills at neck; short sleeves, having one puff. Boys, long trousers, buttoning over the jacket; large linen collar, frilled, &c. The current in fancy dress is decidedly setting toward all that is quaint and picturesque, and savours of what we are pleased to call old English. Some of the most successful costumes worn by children of late have been copied from Kate Greenaway's "Birthday-Book," &c. ”

Various,  The Girl's Own Paper, Vol. VIII, No…

“ In the copy, the fronts are of velvet, fancy or plain plush, and the backs are of plain silk to match it in colour, the sleeves being also of silk. One of the new fancies is to make the dress-sleeves like the waistcoat or plastron, the bodice being of a different stuff, and having a small epaulette on the shoulder. I have been careful to give all these changes in detail, as they will, I know, be very valuable to the home dressmaker, and to those on whom the burden rests of “doing up” half-worn dresses, and making themselves look well and ladylike on small means. ”
