“ Can we conceive that the cellular texture should be an agent for the communication of pain, which is insensible to it itself? Observe also that the parts that are the most abundantly supplied with this texture, as the scrotum, the mediastinum, &c. are not those that sympathize the most. The same is true of the blood vessels, which, by their nature, are not fitted to transmit animal sensibility, and which besides do not exist in all the organs. ”

“ Now they have always appeared to me as [63] red during the contraction as during the dilatation of the organs. Finally, I give this only as a fact, without pretending to draw any inference from it opposed to the common opinion. It is, in fact, possible, that though the quantity of blood be always nearly the same, the rapidity of the circulation may increase; and consequently, in a given time, more of this fluid will be sent there during the plenitude of the viscera. This appears to be necessary for the secretion of the mucous fluids, which are then more abundant. ”

Michael Foster,  Popular Science Monthly (1877)

“ These units constitute the so-called muscular tissue. Of another tissue—viz., the nervous—the marked features are irritability and automatism, with an almost complete absence of contractility and a great restriction of the other qualities. In a third group of units, the activity of the protoplasm is largely confined to the chemical changes of secretion, contractility and automatism (as manifested by movement) being either absent or existing to a very slight degree. Such a secreting tissue, consisting of epithelium-cells, forms the basis of the mucous membrane of the alimentary canal. ”
