“ The next “I will” is found in Luke, fifth chapter. We read of a leper who came to Christ, and said: “Lord, if Thou wilt, Thou canst make me clean.” The Lord touched him, saying, “I will: be thou clean”; and immediately the leprosy left him.
Now if any man or woman full of the leprosy of sin read this, if you will but go to the Master and tell all your case to Him, He will speak to you as He did to that poor leper and say. “I will: be thou clean,” and the leprosy of your sins will flee away from you. It is the Lord, and the Lord alone, who can forgive sins.

Giovanni Boccaccio,  The Decameron (Rigg) — Novel 3… (1903)

“ I have it by revelation of God that the tribulation wherein you stand is come upon you in requital of a sin which you did once commit, of which God is minded that this suffering be a partial purgation, and that you make reparation in full, if you would not find yourself in a far more grievous plight." "Sir," replied the lady, "many sins have I committed, nor know I how among them all to single out that whereof, more than another, God requires reparation at my hands--wherefore, if you know it, tell it me, and what by way of reparation I may do, that will I do." ”

Portrait of Walter Scott Walter Scott,  The Fair Maid of Perth; Or, St…

“ This dark chest contains many a wide range of hill and dale, many a fair forest full of game, the allegiance of a thousand vassals. Wish you for favour in courts, temporal or spiritual? The smiles of kings, the pardon of popes and priests for old crimes, and the indulgence which encourages priest ridden fools to venture on new ones—all these holy incentives to vice may be purchased for gold. Revenge itself, which the gods are said to reserve to themselves, doubtless because they envy humanity so sweet a morsel—revenge itself is to be bought by it. ”
