Treble crochet

“ One sometimes has occasion to use other extra-long stitches, such as quadruple crochet (over four times before insertion of hook in work) , quintuple crochet (over five times) , and so on, which are worked off two at a time, exactly as in treble or double treble. ”

“ Commencing in 10th chain from bottom of front and back, work in the usual way for 25 stitches, a double under each chain. Work from underarm around the armscye until the sleeve is 12 inches in length, or as long as desired, then make the 2 rows of spaces, in treble crochet, as before and finish with 7 rows of seed-stitch, same as body of jacket. ”

“ After making three trebles in last chain you turn and make three chain; then make one * double chain in the last three chain of the previous row; make three chain, then make three treble in the same place you made the last double crochet. Make one double crochet in the next three chain, and repeat from * . Make a border of shell stitch after the shawl is square. Use a very coarse ivory needle for the shawl.
INFANT'S SACQUE IN SHELL STITCH.
Make a chain of one hundred stitches for a foundation. 1st row: Crochet across a row of open trebles, i. ”

“ Treble open Crochet is much the same as the preceding patterns, but having three long stitches and three loop stitches between; in the next row, remember to make the long stitches upon the loops, and the loops on the preceding long stitches; you increase by going twice in the same loop, and decrease by missing one loop. ”

“ Four plain scarlet stripes, and five of the open crochet, arranged as in the preceding example, complete the bag.
A Bag with Five Points.
Commence with a chain of eight stitches: having united the ends, make every other stitch a treble increased stitch,—by crocheting three stitches in one loop. Continue to increase in a similar manner, until twenty-eight [127] rows be worked, taking care that the increasing stitches be kept exactly over each other; when a point in the centre, and a point at the termination of each line of dividing stitches, will be formed. ”

“ Materials required are three skeins of Saxony yarn, one spool silk-finished crochet-cotton or crochet-silk, and two and one-half yards of No. 1 ribbon. Use a hook which will carry the yarn easily.
Make a chain of 100 stitches, turn.
1. Miss 1st 4 stitches, make a treble in each of 96 stitches, drawing up to about five-eighths of an inch. Break and fasten wool (this so the work will be done on the right side; one may turn, if preferred, but the effect is not so good) . ”

“ For the crochet edge:—
1st row: Work with dark olive one double into a stitch at the edge of border. Pass over ope stitch, one double, one half treble, one treble, one half treble, and one double into next stitch, pass over one stitch, and repeat from the beginning of the row.
2nd row (with red wool) : One double into the first double of last row, one single into each stitch of scallop. Repeat.
Directions for making the balls will be found on page 214. They are of red wool and are sewn to the border by a needle and wool. The card for balls should be cut to the size of a fifty-cent piece. ”

“ Repeat 1st, 2d and 3d rows 3 times, which will give you 4 ribs each of pink and white.
13. Chain 3, with white, miss 1st stitch of last row, make a treble in next, then a treble back in 1st stitch, forming a crossed treble; repeat around, join.
14. With pink, a double in a stitch, chain 3; repeat. Fasten off securely.
For the foot:
1. With white, fasten in the 17th treble from back of leg, draw up a loop through each of 6 stitches, keeping all on needle; take up yarn and draw through 1st stitch, * again draw through 2, and repeat until all are worked off ”

“ Thus: (Chain 3, miss 3, 1 treble in next) three times is equivalent to chain 3, miss 3, 1 treble in next, chain 3, miss 3, 1 treble in next, chain 3, miss 3, 1 treble in next; or to * chain 3, miss 3, 1 treble in next, repeat from * twice.
The worker should be careful in the selection of a hook. It should be well made and smooth, and of a size to carry the wool smoothly, without catching in and roughening it. If too large, on the other hand, the work is apt to be sleazy. ”

“ In the 2nd round of these circles fasten the cotton on every 5th stitch of the crochet circle. Work 1 round of open-work treble stitch in the double stitch of the crochet circle, work in tatting the border of the rosette as follows in 1 [51] round:--* 2 double, 1 purl, 2 double, fastened on to 1 chain stitch between 2 treble stitch, 2 double; 1 purl, 2 double,; join these stitches into a circle; turn the work so that the wrong side lies upwards, and work a second larger circle at a short distance consisting of 4 double, 5 purl divided by 2 double, 4 double, turn again and repeat from *. ”

“ Make a little bag of soft cotton cloth and partly fill it with rice.
2. Lay the red and blue pieces together, backs facing each other and “ribs” running in the same direction.
3. With the white yarn, crochet the edges together with single crochet, leaving one end open. Slip the cloth bag inside the knitted bag and finish crocheting it together.
Mary Frances found that purling seemed quite awkward to do at first, but after she had done half a dozen rows, the stitches formed much more easily. When she finished the red square she stopped to admire the pretty even rows of ribs. ”

“ Some few rows narrow the squares at each end. In that case miss 4 at the beginning and end, instead of one. Work in the ends as you go on. This part of the anti-macassar uses three reels of cotton. Thread the blue beads on the 4th, No. 8 reel, and work the borders.
Begin by a row of single crochet on the wrong side, on the foundation chain. All the subsequent rows are done on the same side. Begin every row with two plain stitches, beside those in the pattern.
1st pattern row: X 2 plain, 2 beads, 5 plain, 2 beads, 14 plain X repeat to the end in this and every future row. ”

“ Beginning at the neck-end of the front strip, leave the 1st 6 stitches (equal to 3 stars) and work to end of row in star-stitch; make a rib as directed. Work 2 more rows of stars, with the ribs alternating, leaving 1 star less at the top or neck-end each time.
Work the other half to correspond, then join in center of the back with single crochet, putting hook through a loop of each part. If carefully done the joining will not be discernible. Join under arms, also, leaving the opening for armholes. ”

“ It will be perceived that the sprigs run in a diagonal direction; and the commencement of the first two rows of the fourth stripe, on referring to the corresponding part of the previous stripe, will show where the next sprig is to be begun.
If worked for a bag, or sac de voyage, the pattern should be commenced from the bottom, thus forming a border at the lower part; but if a pillow, table cover, or couvre-pied, is intended to be made,—first crochet two plain rows, and then commence the pattern as at the sixteenth row. ”

“ Continue these stripes, until the back be sufficiently long to be sewn to the front on the other side. It is advisable, before commencing a slipper, to cut a paper pattern of the desired size and shape.
The above form chaussons to wear over the shoes, the sole being formed of coarse crochet in black; or they may be made up in the usual way for slippers, either for ladies or gentlemen. In crochet silk they are extremely warm and durable.—The ends of the wool or silk, are to be threaded with a needle, and run into the work on the inside. ”

“ These are very comfortable for an invalid, they are generally done in shaded wool, and six colours, say scarlet, green, lilac, orange, blue and drab. Cast on ninety loops, and eight rows of each colour; this is done in the plain double crochet, and when you cast on the loops [51] for the foundation, join the ends, and work round, they are finished with velvet ends, and two pieces of cord round each piece of velvet; black looks better than coloured.
A BRIOCHE, OR TURKISH CUSHION.
Cast on thirty loops with black wool, crochet four rows all round, increasing one stitch at the end ”

“ Sew on the large gold flowers, passing the ends through the centre loop of the screens, and form a little rosette of X 6 chains, s.c. in the round, X repeated to close the middle.
TO MAKE UP THE SCREENS.—Cut out a hexagon, the exact size of the crochet, in paper, and bend the wire into the same form. Be very particular that the wire frame shall be true and even. Cover it on both sides with white silk, over one side of which sew the crochet. It will only require to be fastened round the edges. ”

“ Silk, cotton, and wool, are employed, and the work is so easy, that a moderate share of attention to details, will make an expert workman.
Stitches.—These are called plain single crochet, plain double crochet, plain stitch open crochet, and open crochet, with a variety of stitches. It is not easy to describe the manner of working crochet stitch, though it is easy of execution: perhaps the following will be found tolerably correct. Take a skein of wool, and having wound it, make a loop at one end, like the first link in a chain ”

“ It is worked in three rows—a linen thread gives the best effect. To work the first row, begin with one double stitch into a button-hole loop, then two chain, and one double crochet into every second button-hole loop; on approaching the corners, work into every loop so as to allow the next row to lie easily round them—nothing spoils good work so much as to see the stitching tightened and strained round the edges and corners. ”

“ Having the working end of wool out at the top of hem, ready for the crochet hook (a coarse steel hook is best) , catch up a chain stitch with the hook and * bring the wool across the hook as for doing a stitch, insert the hook at the bottom of hem, catch wool on opposite side, the opposite way to lifting the thread as in crocheting, that is hooking the wool in a downward movement from right to left, draw loop through and up level with the top of line. ”

“ When beads are introduced, the wrong side of the work becomes the right. It is possible to crochet with the beads on the right side, but they never lay so firmly, nor indeed is it the proper way of using them.
The average number of stitches for the length of a purse, in fine silk, is one hundred and sixty. In coarse silk,—one hundred and ten.
From ninety to one hundred stitches form the circle of a purse in fine silk.
One hundred and thirty stitches may be taken for the round of a bag, in crochet silk. ”

“ To work THROUGH a stitch, is to draw the thread under instead of in it. This is stronger than the usual method, but not so neat; it is, therefore, rarely used for anything but very open work.
Square Crochet is that which is made entirely in small squares, those which form the pattern being closely filled in, and the ground open. Open squares are formed thus: 1 dc. 2 ch., miss 2, repeated. Close squares contain three dc. stitches, thus: 1 c. 1 o., would have 4 dc. 2 ch. Every pattern in square crochet requires a foundation chain of stitches which can be divided by three and leave one over ”

“ In the next round, to bring the cap into shape for the head, decrease by missing every ninth stitch, and afterwards for about ten rounds, or until the cap is the size required for the head, decrease about six times in each round. For the band: work eight rounds of plain double crochet. A tuft of wool is to be added in the centre of the crown, to make which wind a good quantity of wool over a piece of card about three inches wide, tie it strongly together, sew it on the top and cut and pull it into shape. The cap should be lined with silk the same colour as the wool with which it is worked. ”

“ The embroidered sheath and chased silver needle-case have disappeared even from the cherry-wood workstands of New England, and a thousand beautiful designs for chairs, cushions, toilets and wearing apparel, supply the 9place of the old-fashioned stocking basket with its well mended contents. In England and Ireland, where the ladies are always industrious, Crochet work has arisen to the dignity of an art. It is introduced into the national schools, and hundreds of poor are supported by the rich laces and pretty collars produced there. ”

“ These are to be done in two colours, say shaded blue or scarlet, with black stripes between; cast on twelve loops, crochet four rows in black, increasing one stitch on each side, and one in the middle, this will form a point on the top of the foot; then two rows of red wool, increasing; you ought to have three stripes of black, and two of coloured; leave all the stitches except twelve at the side, continue six stripes of black, and seven of coloured: will make them large enough for a lady ”

“ Plain crochet-purses are exceedingly strong, and may be made very prettily with a moderate sized netting silk. Those, worked in rows the length of the purse, are the most easily made.
Make a chain in scarlet netting silk of one hundred and forty stitches, on which crochet three plain rows with the same colour. Then, five plain rows in shades of green, or stone colour. These two stripes are to be repeated until the purse is of a sufficient width. When completed, it is to be neatly sewn up, or joined by crocheting the two sides together. The ends are then to be drawn up, and the purse trimmed. ”

“ Make a row of single crochet along the other edge of the opening. Break off and fasten yarn.
For Buttonhole Loops:
Fasten pink wool at top edge of the opening, and working toward the sole, make 2 slip stitches.
Make 2 chain stitches. Skip 2 stitches on the edge and make 2 slip stitches. Make another loop in the same way and finish edge of opening with slip stitches. Break off and fasten yarn.
Fasten all ends securely. ”
