Der Freischütz

Definition and stakes

Portrait of Henry Edward Krehbiel Henry Edward Krehbiel,  Chapters of Opera

“ In another sense, too, "Der Freischütz" is a national opera; the spirit of its music is drawn from the art-form which the people created. Instead of resting on the highly artificial product of the Italian renaissance, it rests upon popular song—folk-song, the song of the folk. Its melodies echo the cadences of the Volkslieder in which the German heart voices its dearest loves. Instead of shining with the light of the Florentine courts it glows with the rays of the setting sun filtered through the foliage of the Black Forest. ”

George T. Ferris,  The Great German Composers

“ How much I am indebted to you for your magnificent poem! I embrace you with the sincerest emotion, returning to your muse the laurels I owe her. God grant that you may be happy. Love him who loves you with infinite respect. "Your Weber."
"Der Freischütz" was such a success as to place the composer in the front ranks of the lyric stage. The striking originality, the fire, the passion of his music, the ardent national feeling, and the freshness of treatment, gave a genuine shock of delight and surprise to the German world.

A Dictionary of Music and Musicians (1900)

“ Lieder at once dignified and easily comprehensible, melodies genuine in feeling and full of fire, orchestral colouring as new as it is charming, instrumentation both bold and spirituel, an intuitive grasp of the situation and complete mastery in treating it, such as genius alone is capable of. Only the modes of expression are more refined; Der Freischütz deals with the simple, hearty life of the peasantry and forest folk, Euryanthe with the highest grades of society. ”
