As special courses, 220many of these carried a high tuition fee. Next came the teaching of professors and deans of engineering institutions in techniques of computer education for undergraduates. ”

Along with computing machines a whole new technology is growing. Universities and colleges—even high schools—are teaching courses in computers. The Institute is the Governments lead laboratory for measurements and is charged with assisting industry in the rapid commercialization of advanced technology. “ It will be seen, therefore, that in nearly all European countries, instruction in engineering in all its branches and in chemical technology has become a recognized part of a university course, and that the faculty of applied science has been so enlarged as to provide technical education of the highest grade.
Some of the best schools for the higher technical instruction—for the training of masters and of those who are to occupy the position of managers in engineering; and industrial works — are found in the United States. ”

“ Finally, maintenance of a solid computing science institutional capability depends on a vigorous and continuing program of intellectual exchange with peer organizations in academia, industry, and government. ”

“ The United States is not alone in placing importance on the computer in schools. Our Department of Commerce has published details of Russian work in this direction, noting that it began in 1955 and places high priority on the training of specialists in computer research, machine translation, automation, and so on. ”
