Basic lead carbonate

Definition and stakes

Various,  Encyclopaedia Britannica, 11th Edition…

“ When carbonic acid is present the dissolved oxide is soon precipitated as basic carbonate, so that the corrosion of the lead becomes continuous. Since all soluble lead compounds are strong cumulative poisons, danger is involved in using lead cisterns or pipes in the distribution of pure waters. The word “pure” is emphasized because experience shows that the presence in a water of even small proportions of calcium bicarbonate or sulphate prevents its action on lead. All impurities do not act in a similar way. Ammonium nitrate and nitrite, for instance, intensify the action of a water on lead. ”

The New Student's Reference Work (1914)

“ White Lead is one of the compounds of lead, called by chemists basic carbonate of lead, and is used extensively in the manufacture of paint. The Dutch process of manufacture is the oldest. Thin sheets of lead are rolled up and put into earthen vessels, which have some weak vinegar at the bottom. These vessels are surrounded with spent tan-bark or some other material which ferments readily, and thus produces heat and gives off carbon dioxide. The pots are thus left for about six weeks, when the lead is found either thickly coated or entirely changed into the white, basic carbonate of lead. ”

Kenneth W. Goadby,  Lead poisoning and lead absorption (1912)

“ During this period the temperature rises to 75° to 80° C., considerable evolution of carbonic acid gas takes place, and the lead is converted first into acetate and subsequently the white basic carbonate. The layers (white beds) are uncovered and the corroded strips (corrosions) collected by hand. They are placed in trays and carried to heavy steel rollers by means of which and subsequent raking in wash becks the carbonate is detached from the uncorroded central core of blue lead. In many factories corrosions are now conveyed from the stacks to the wash becks or rollers by travelling cranes. ”
