Ichthyolith

“ Other genera contain some freshwater and some marine species, as Cottus, Mugil, and Anguilla, or eel. The rest are either common to rivers and the sea, as the salmon; or are exclusively characteristic of salt water. The above observations respecting fossil fishes are applicable only to the more modern or tertiary deposits; for in the more ancient rocks the forms depart so widely from those of existing fishes, that it is very difficult, at least in the present state of science, to derive any positive information from ichthyolites respecting the element in which strata were deposited. ”

“ It is preferable to leave the teeth attached to small blocks of the chalk; as in the examples, figured Lign. 193. But to develop the beautiful Chalk Ichthyolites, particularly those of the Osmeroides, Macropoma, &c. some practice and considerable dexterity are required. The compressed fishes, as the Beryx, like those in the Tertiary limestones, often lie in the sedimentary plane of the stone, and may be sufficiently exposed, by a blow of a hammer or a pick, to show the nature of the fossil, and admit of being easily developed. ”

“ I was struck, during my explorations at this time, as I had been often before, by the style of grouping, if I may so speak, which obtains among the Lower Old Red fossils. In no deposit with which I am acquainted, however rich in remains, have all its ichthyolites been found lying together. The collector finds some one or two species very numerous; some two or three considerably less so, but not unfrequent; some one or two more, perhaps, exceedingly rare; and a few, though abundant in other localities, that never occur at all. ”
