Mealworm

Definition and stakes

Thomas Alfred Coward,  Bird Haunts and Nature Memories… (1922)

“ The best beloved food was the mealworm; the larva of a beetle; this they preferred to their natural diet of dors, or big-bodied moths. Mealworms can hardly be looked upon as natural food, for the larvæ of beetles cannot come in the way of animals which feed upon the wing; yet it is the food which, once tasted, no bat can resist.
In a very short time my noctules would scuttle across the table to my hand when I offered mealworms, but so frequently did they fix their sharp teeth in my fingers that I began to offer the gift from between forceps.

Various,  Bird-Lore, March-April 1916

“ If you want birds to nest near you, you must supply them with food. No food will attract insectivorous birds more effectively than Mealworms. The old birds eat them and also give them to their young. Mealworms should be fed from a shallow tin, glass or china vessel that stands at some shaded place, free of the sun’s rays. ”

Henry S. Fitch,  Life History and Ecology of the Five-Lined Skink…

“ Full-grown mealworms averaging 26 mm. in length, and approximately .11 grams, are somewhat smaller than the usual prey of adults. In captivity hungry adult skinks took from one to nine such mealworms at a meal. However, they could not be induced to feed daily over periods of weeks, even when kept at high temperatures. Over a period of 64 days an adult male kept at approximately 80° F. in the daytime and 10 to 15 degrees lower at night, ate a total of 30 mealworms, which, in the aggregate, weighed approximately 42 per cent of his body weight. ”
