“ TO INSERT A QUEEN-CELL When a cell is introduced, it is not necessary, nor is it practical, to cut the comb to insert the cell in, as recommended by some bee-keepers. When a queen has been removed and the combs replaced 49in the hive, just thrust your little finger down between the combs near the top-bars, and thus make room for the cell and immediately place it in the opening made. The bees will not destroy the cell if it contains a healthy queen. ”

“ I have raised some queens by letting the nucleus have brood to start queen cells from; but they have been slow coming to maturity; and after they have laid a few eggs, they are sometimes discarded and a young queen raised from the brood. The trouble seems to be that where queen cells are started by a small cluster of bees, they do not feed the grubs plentifully enough, and when the queen hatches out not a particle of royal jelly is found in the cell. Whereas, when a strong colony raises a queen, the cell will contain a large quantity of jelly after the young queen emerges. ”

“ Thus we see that the making of the queen rests entirely with the workers themselves, and depends simply on an egg being placed in a certain kind of cell, and having special food and plenty of ventilation. After the queen has been hatched, the royal cell is cut away, and its place filled with honey cells. The wax of the cell is not wasted, but used in the construction of new comb. ”
