“ Only the official scorer’s records showing the standing of the candidates were considered, but it was generally the fellow who had the best record for any given position who got the chance to pull off the thrilling plays, because only the good players can do the wonderful things. ”

“ A captain is appointed for each target, who designates a target scorer, and the gentleman who makes the largest score, is appointed captain of the target at the succeeding meeting. The target scorer, at the close of the round, hands the score to the official scorer, who announces the result at the next meeting of the club. Some clubs have adopted the plan of having every alternate meeting for prize shooting, awarding some small token to the lady and gentleman who makes the highest scores. ”

“ Give the winning team 2 points and score a team 1 for every time a bag touches the floor, either on account of a poor throw or a bad catch. Play three or five games and add up the points. (Keep score on the floor with chalk.) This method of scoring puts a premium on careful playing, for a team that wins, but makes two errors, will be no better off than a team which plays slower, but without errors. There should be one umpire for each team to count the errors, and a scorer who may also be judge of finish. ”

“ No person engaged in a match, either as umpire, scorer, or player, shall be either directly or indirectly interested [51] in any bet upon the game. Neither umpire, scorer, nor player shall be changed during a match, unless with the consent of both parties (except for a violation of this law) except as provided in Section 29, and then the umpire may dismiss any transgressors. ”

“ Umpire who must be a thoroughly competent and impartial girl. The umpires call all fouls except cases coming under the authority of the referee; when the fouls are made by players crossing the field lines, linesmen judge them.
Each umpire makes her own decision independently of the other, but a foul called by one umpire cannot be questioned by the other. The umpire calls time by blowing a whistle when stating a foul and indicating the offender; she reports to the scorer the player at fault and the nature of the foul. The referee appoints the
Scorer who must keep the score. ”

“ A match is played between two sides of eleven players each, unless otherwise agreed to; each side has two innings, taken alternately, except in the case provided for in Law 53. The choice of innings shall be decided by tossing.
2. The score shall be reckoned by runs. A run is scored—1st, so often as the batsmen after a hit, or at any time while the ball is in play, shall have crossed, and made good their ground from end to end. 2d, for penalties under Laws 16, 34, 41, and allowances under 44. Any run or runs so scored shall be duly recorded by scorers appointed for the purpose. ”

“ There is no doubt but that a pretty lofted shot on the putting-green into the hole is a beautiful stroke, and I fail to see why it should be sacrificed because another player finds that his score, which he is keeping when he should not, suffers by being stymied. I do not say that I blame the player who is always keeping his score when he plays matches—everybody can do what he likes—but I do protest against a lovely shot being sacrificed on the ground of score. ”

“ SCORE.—A goal keeper scores one point for his team every time that he catches a ball which has not been touched by one of the guards around his goal. A ball caught by a goal keeper after being touched by a guard does not score.
In addition to the score made by goal keepers, a guards' score is kept, each player counting the number of balls he catches and holds, no matter where he be standing, whether in his position as guard or in the center base from which he is to be thrower. Such a catch by a guard scores one point, the guards reporting their points at the end of the game. ”

“ When any player of note tells you that he plays the first over or two without a slight feeling of that kind, and that he is as cool and confident then as he is the last over, do not be discouraged if it be different with you, or say, "That accounts for his scoring more freely than I do." Perfect command of nerve at the beginning of an innings is much to be desired, if it do not lead to over-confidence; but the very few I have met who said they possessed it have always given me the impression of being too eager to score the first over or two, and hit rather wildly to accomplish their end. ”

“ Scoring in Basketball
A score in basketball is made every time a player throws the ball into one of the baskets placed at each end of the court. In the West Branch High School the gymnasium is well equipped with everything the students need for their athletic contests....

Better. A score is made in basketball every time a player succeeds in throwing the ball into the basket guarded by his opponents. If this goal, as it is called, is made from the field, it counts two points. Sometimes, however, one team is given a free throw at the basket as the result of a foul’s being made. ”

“ A word to goal-keeper. You must make up your mind, to endure reproaches patiently, and defeat bravely. Study to succeed; and, believe us, goal-keeping is a post worthy of practice, and infinitely more responsible in a hard-pressed match than all others. When the ball is sent whizzing outside of the goal, and your opponents shout “game,” when it is not game, we hope you will not feel as vexed as we do. It jars on our nerves like a false check to an old chess-player. ”

“ There are a few exceptional cases when a great player is on the top of his form, goes for everything and brings off everything, and makes a phenomenal score; but I notice that generally these marvellous scores come off when he is playing an ordinary single or best of two balls, and merely counting the strokes. In medal play you are fighting an invisible phantom, in match play your opponent is by no means invisible. You regulate your play by what he is doing; if he is in a bunker, by attempting a long carry off the tee, you play short and run no risks, but that is for that hole only ”

“ GOAL-KEEPING.
No moment in the game of Lacrosse is of more intense and nervous interest, than the critical junctures of attack and defence at the goals. The fate of every game culminates at one or the other. No score can be made by any other play than that which puts the ball in, and then the score is not individual but collective. ”

“ A goal may be obtained by any kind of kick except a punt.
6. A Try is gained when a player touches the ball down in his opponents' goal.
7. A match shall be decided by a majority of points; a goal shall equal three points, with the exception of a goal kicked from a kick awarded by way of penalty, which shall equal two points, and a try one point. If the number of points be equal, or no goal be kicked or try obtained, the match shall be drawn. When a goal is kicked from a try the goal only is scored. ”

“ I think I have touched upon nearly everything that might help a young player to a long score, and with just a word about playing against odds I have done. Whether against eighteen or twenty-two in the field, play the same game that you would against an eleven. I have very often found that the fieldsmen in the outfield are placed too deep, and a second run can be stolen after the ball passes the men close in. Do not hit to leg, but rather place or snick the ball; you will get just as many runs without the risk of being caught. ”

“ The object of the players, on both sides, during this first stage of the game, is to score seven balls of their respective colours as soon as possible. Should a player inadvertently put a ball of the opponents colour into goal, it scores for them, and against his own side. The duration of each game being limited to half-an-hour, scoring is of more importance during the first stage than obstructing. ”

“ Now I come to a drying, sticky wicket. This is about the worst you can play upon, and he who scores largely on it deserves to be praised indeed. If the bowling be indifferent the player who can pull or hit a long hop to leg has a decided advantage, as the ball hangs a great deal at times and favours that kind of play. If the bowler be on the spot, then tall scoring is an impossibility. The work to be got on the ball is astounding; I have seen balls break a foot or more. ”

“ An alternative method of scoring is as follows, in which the term “hand-in” is substituted for “server,” and “hand-out” for “striker-out.” In this system the hand-in alone is able to score. If he loses a stroke he becomes hand-out, and his opponent becomes hand-in, and serves his turn. Fifteen points won constitutes the game. If both players have won fourteen points, the game is set to three, and the score called “love-all.” The hand-in continues to serve, and the player who first scores three points wins the game. If he or his partner loses a stroke, the other side shall be hand-in. ”

“ Scoring and Handicapping.—A match consists of three or five “sets”; a “set” of eeven games. The winner of six games wins the set. If a player wins six games consecutively he wins a “love set,” even though his opponent may have won several games. The loser of a love set, by an old custom, gives the marker a shilling. Should the score be called “Five games all,” the players may arrange to play a “vantage game,” the set in that case not being won till one or other has won two games in succession. ”

“ If a player throws for the goal and the whistle of the referee, umpire, or time-keeper sounds while the ball is in the air, and the throw results in a goal, it is a count.
When the umpire’s whistle sounds simultaneously with either the referee’s or time-keeper’s, the umpire’s takes precedence.
A goal scored before the whistle can be blown for a foul made by the side scoring, does not count; but if a player while throwing for the goal is fouled by an opponent and succeeds in scoring, both count. ”

“ There should be a judge of fouls for each team and two judges at the finish. One foul is scored against a team for—
1. Every player who does not touch the ball as it is passed backward.
2. Every player (except a returning player) who turns to face the next one and hand the ball instead of passing it backward overhead.
3. A returning player tossing the ball to the head of the file.
4. The head player standing forward of the starting line.
5. A runner touching the goal as he encircles it.

The teams win in the order of finishing if there be no fouls. ”

“ What football-player knows not the phrase, “Mark your men”? “After this, they pitch two bushes in the ground, some eight or ten feet asunder, and directly against them, ten or twelve score paces off, other twain in like distance, which they term goales, where some indifferent person throweth up a balle, the which whosoever can catch and carry through the adversaries’ goals hath won the game.” ”

“ The contents are then examined, and the points are scored according to the number of pieces which stand on their pedestals. If the pawn has its colored side upward, the player scores one point; if it has the plain side uppermost, he deducts a point from his score. ”

“ A very low score, in the nature of things, makes a close score. But there is no reason why a larger score, involving sharper work on the part of every player on the team, under conditions equally favorable to both sides, should not still be a close score, with many more incidents to interest the spectator.
The ball that has been in use for so many years had a small core of solid rubber in the center. ”

“ A target is placed and the balls are thrown at it; or several targets at different distances may be aimed at by the players. A score is kept. The one getting the greatest number of points wins the game. Or sides may be formed.
BOMBARDMENT This game is played with balls and Indian clubs—half as many as there are players. Bean bags may be used instead of balls. A score is decided upon, and an umpire keeps the record. Each player, in throwing, tries to knock down a club, and this club counts for one or more, up to the number decided upon by the players. ”

“ Well, the first Scouring, which I could find out any thing about, was held in 1755, and all [125] the sports then seem to have been pretty much the same as those of the present day. But there was one thing which happened which could not very well have happened now. A fine dashing fellow, dressed like a gentleman, got on to the stage, held his own against all the old gamesters, and in the end won the chief prize for backsword-play, or cudgel-play, as they used to call it. ”

“ There should then be one rope for each line. A score should be kept for each team, each feat successfully performed by a player scoring one point for his or her team. For each round, each player in all teams should perform the same feat. ”

“ Great scores at cricket, like great work of any kind, are, as a rule, the results of years of careful and judicious training and not accidental occurrences.
If you have occasion to travel a considerable distance to play, make an effort to get to your destination the night before, or at least some time before, the match begins. There is nothing so fatiguing to the eyesight as a long railway journey, and going straight from the railway station to the wicket is often fatal to long scoring. ”

“ A ball going out of bounds is out of play, and must be returned to the server unless it should rebound [338] in the court for which it was intended, when it should still be considered in play.
SCORE.—The score is entirely for a defensive game, being wholly on the opponents' failures. If desired, the score may be the same as in tennis, but is generally as follows:—
One point is scored for (a) failure to strike the ball as directed (from above with the open palm) ; (b) failure to bound the ball before sending it into the opponents' ground; (c) failure to return a good serve or play. ”
