“ It is rarely you meet with players magnanimous enough to throw at goal in the way you would prefer, or a little slower than you would suggest. They may put the greatest amount of brute force into their most violent throw, and you must not budge or move a hair of your eye lashes. Have you ever had an opponent, noted for hard throwing, pick his ground ten feet from you, and send the ball whizzing from the lower angle down the netting straight at your face? ”

“ Beside the powerful and lofty throw, they have a way of suddenly flinging it underhand, so that it skims just above the ground, and, when it touches the earth, proceeds with a series of ricochets that must be peculiarly embarrassing to a novice in that kind of warfare. ”

DANGEROUS THROWING.
Almost any throw may be made dangerous if you like, or do not care. Nearly all old players, and too many new ones, can relate some instance of personal temporary injury from dangerous throws; and there seems something so deliberately wicked in rash methods of throwing, when men know they must hurt some one, that we wonder any player of feeling or honour would use them. ”

“ Besides the high count, they have the privilege of a second throw. This, if lot backgammon came first, and was succeeded by dice backgammon, would naturally pass into our rule of giving doubles another throw. The throw of one white, which is called "child," or táb, i. e., "game," has a special power, for only by it may a "dog," that is, a stone or draught, be moved out of its original place in the outer row, and set at liberty to circulate along the lines of squares or "houses," taking an enemy's dog if found alone in its house. ”

LOOK BEFORE YOU THROW.
The slightest glance at the point to be thrown to is of the greatest importance to make a dead shot. You may and should be able to throw well without it, but sure shots without it are more the exception than the rule. Looking is almost equivalent to aiming, and whether you aim deliberately or imperceptibly, it materially affects your shot. ”

“ Supposing some of you boys were put beside a pile of cricket balls, and for a wager or prize you were called upon to throw the balls as fast and as far as you could. A good thrower would perhaps throw the first ball eighty yards, he would throw the second ball seventy-five yards, the third seventy yards, the fourth sixty-five yards, and so each ball that he threw would go a less and less distance, until he had no strength left, and he could throw no more balls. ”

“ Instead of making each throw as if the destinies of the world were at stake, the soldiers played fast and vigorously, aiming rather to knock the opponent's ball away from a coveted position near the goal than to reach the goal. ”

“ Handling and Tripping.— Handling is intentionally playing the ball with the hand or arm, and Tripping is intentionally throwing, or attempting to throw, an opponent by the use of the legs, or by stooping in front of or behind him.
Holding includes the obstruction of a player by the hand or any part of the arm extended from the body. ”

“ The one moving his foot or touching his hand or any part of his body to the floor, so as to get a better base, is thrown. The throw must be made with the hand. It is thus not rulable to push with the head, shoulder or elbow. ”

“ When your goal is crowded, or the enemy have managed to rally more men to the attack than you have for defence, a long, judicious throw checkmates the assault, and gives an advantage to your side, who are stronger where the ball falls, in consequence of the bunching attack of your opponents. ”

A trick from which considerable amusement may be derived is the throwing of an opponent over the shoulder. It is better that the throw be made over the right shoulder. The illustration shows the best position for the making of the throw. Of course, much must depend upon the way in which the assailant finds it possible to make the attack. ”

“ The ball first makes its appearance midway between the parties, to which point a most furious rush is made, and the object to be attained and which talleys, is, for the player to throw the ball outside of his own line of standing. ”

“ Any number of persons may play this game, and agreeably to the number engaged in it, is the quantity of sticks or counters. The plumstones or bones are placed in a dish, and a throw is made by simply jolting the vessel against the ground to make the seeds or bones rebound, and they are counted as they lie when they fall. ”
