Spectral line

Definition and stakes

Portrait of Niels Bohr Niels Bohr,  The Theory of Spectra and Atomic Constitution…

“ The radiation of light corresponding to a particular spectral line is according to our assumption emitted by a transition between two stationary states, corresponding to two different frequencies of revolution, and we are not justified in expecting any simple relation between these frequencies of revolution of the electron and the frequency of the emitted radiation. ”

“ Or rather, the spectroscope in alliance with the photographic camera; for the spectral changes indicating the direction and velocity of motion in the line of sight can be systematically studied, as a rule, only when registered on sensitive plates. The upshot has been to bring within the cognisance of science the marvellous systems known as “spectroscopic binaries.” They are of great variety. Some consist of a bright, others of a bright and dark, pair. Those that revolve in a plane nearly coinciding with our line of vision undergo mutual occultations. ”

“ A further division or change of the centers will result in making it impossible for the given spectrum to be emitted or absorbed although the resultant particles or entities may possess a characteristic spectrum of their own. From the definition it is to be noticed that the centers need not necessarily be matter, i. e., possess mass. "When the centers move with reference to the observer, their spectral lines and bands will show the Doppler effect.
Light centers seem to be very complex in their nature.
