“ Our premiums are not offered as an inducement to any one to subscribe for our magazines. We have put the subscription price just as low as possible, so as to be within the reach of all. The premiums are simply offered to those who choose to give us the time, trouble and expense of obtaining for us new subscribers, and sending us the necessary amount.
3. The sender’s subscription cannot count for a premium when sent alone, but may be counted when two or more new subscriptions are sent at the same time for any of the magazines. ”

“ When a subscription is sent in by some suffragist who is acting as agent in forwarding subscriptions for other people, we acknowledge the order only to the sender, thinking that receipt of the paper by the subscriber is sufficient acknowledgment. ”

“ This wonderful offer appealed with singular force to the class of readers of this particular paper, and they decided to take advantage of it. The advertisement appeared on Sunday, and Monday's first mail brought the magazine over eight hundred letters with ten cents enclosed "for a year's subscription as per your advertisement in yesterday's —." The magazine management consulted its lawyer, who advised the publisher to make the newspaper pay the extra ninety cents on each subscription, and, although this demand was at first refused, the proprietors of the daily finally yielded. ”

“ In considering what was necessary to complete a valid subscription, the cases of Nugent v. Supervisors, 19 Wall. 241, and County of Moultrie v. Savings Bank, 92 U.S. 631, were cited, and the rule upon that subject, as recognized in those cases, was in all respects approved. That rule may be stated thus: An actual manual subscription on the books of a railroad company is not indispensably necessary to bind a municipality as a subscriber to the capital stock. ”
