Arnold Schoenberg

Portrait of James Huneker James Huneker,  Ivory, Apes and Peacocks

“ Every composer has his aura; the aura of Arnold Schoenberg is, for me, the aura of subtle ugliness, of hatred and contempt, of cruelty, and of the mystic grandiose. He is never petty. He sins in the grand manner of Nietzsche's [Pg 103] Superman, and he has the courage of his chromatics. If such music-making is ever to become accepted, then I long for Death the Releaser. ”

“ SCHOENBERG
Arnold Schoenberg was born in Vienna September 13th, 1874. He was self-taught until his 20th year. His first instruction was received from his brother-in-law, Alexander von Zemlinsky. In 1901 he went to Berlin, and became the Kapellmeister of the "Uberbrettl," the cabaret managed by Birnbaum, Wedekind and von Wolzogen. Due to the influence of Richard Strauss, he secured a position as instructor in Stern's Conservatory. In 1903 he returned to Vienna. He aroused the interest of Gustav Mahler, who secured performances for several of his works.

Portrait of Carl Van Vechten Carl Van Vechten,  Music after the great war, and other studies (1915)

“ Arnold Schoenberg is another matter. He is still using as propaganda music which he wrote many years ago. No public has yet caught up [11] with his present output. That is an excellent sign that his music is of the future. The string sextet, Verklärte Nacht, which the Kneisel Quartet played more than once in the season just past, dates from 1899. The string quartets were written in 1905 and 1908. The five orchestral pieces, the six piano pieces, and Pierrot Lunaire, other music of his on which what fame he possesses outside of Austria rests, are all over two years old. ”
