Gershom

“ With regard to this reading, the Talmud (Baba bathr.f. 109b) observes: “Was he a son of Gershom, or was he not rather a son of Moses? as it is written, the sons of Moses were Gershom and Eliezer (1Ch 23:14) , but because he did the deeds of Manasseh (the idolatrous son of Hezekiah, 2 Kings 21) the Scripture assigns him to the family of Manasseh.” On this Rabbabar bar Channa observes, that “the prophet (i.e., the author of our book) studiously avoided calling Gershom the son of Moses, because it would have been ignominious to Moses to have had an ungodly son ”

“ Priests and descendants of David. Of priests, Gershom of the sons of Phinehas, and Daniel of the sons of Ithamar. Gershom and Daniel are the names of heads of priestly houses, and “sons of Phinehas and sons of Ithamar” designations of races. Phinehas was the son of the high priest Eleazar, the son of Aaron, and Ithamar a younger son of Aaron, 1Ch 6:4 and 1Ch 6:3. This does not signify that only the two priests Gershom and Daniel went up with Ezra; for in Ezr 8:24 he chose twelve from among the chief of the priests, who went up with him, to have charge of the gifts (Bertheau) . ”

“ Their chief occupation on both sides of the Rhine was the study of the Talmud, into which Gershom had initiated them. "They drive away sleep to absorb themselves in the Talmud."
The first Jewish persecution on Andalusian soil by the Mahometan fanatics of Granada alarmed all the communities of Spain, but it did not have the effect of discouraging them, or producing stagnation. The pursuit of science and poetry had become second nature to the Jews of southern Spain, and only frequent and crushing disasters could repress their love. ”

“ An alarming disease seized upon Gershom, the eldest son, and at the same time intimations not to be mistaken convinced his parents that it was sent in token of divine displeasure for long-neglected duty. God's eye is ever on his children, and though He is forbearing, He will not forever spare the chastening rod, if they live on in disobedience to his commands. Both Moses and Zipporah knew what was the appointed seal of God's covenant with Abraham, and we cannot understand why they so long deferred including their children in that covenant. ”

“ Thy people are driven from their homes, they raise their eyes in longing to Thee." During this persecution many Jews became Christians, either to save their lives or their possessions. Among them was Gershom's son. When the latter died a Christian, his hapless father observed the mourning ceremonials for him as for one who had died a Jew.
Simon ben Isaac, by his zeal, and probably by bribing the officials with large sums of money, succeeded in staying the persecution, and even in obtaining permission for the Jews to settle again in Mayence. ”

“ The decree was probably not confined to Mayence, but applied to other communities. The poet, Simon ben Isaac, composed dirges, lamenting the expulsion, as though it were a terrible persecution, intended to uproot Judaism from the hearts of its followers.
Gershom, too, though by no means a poet, gave utterance to his grief at the severe persecution of Henry II in penitential hymns. "Thou hast made those who despise Thy Law," he says, "to have dominion over Thy people; they bow down to senseless images, and would compel us, too, to worship them. ”

“ Why is it that you have left the man? Call him, that he may eat bread." 002:021 Moses was content to dwell with the man. He gave Moses Zipporah, his daughter. 002:022 She bore a son, and he named him Gershom,{"Gershom" sounds like the Hebrew for "an alien there."} for he said, "I have lived as a foreigner in a foreign land." 002:023 It happened in the course of those many days, that the king of Egypt died, and the children of Israel sighed because of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up to God because of the bondage. ”

“ When they retired for the night, everything was arranged, so that the different members of the party might know where to assemble within the works. Among the effects of Gershom, were a conch and a horn; the latter being one of those common instruments of tin, which are so much used in and about American farm-houses, to call the laborers from the field. The conch was given to the men, that, in case of need, they might sound the alarm from without, while the horn, or trumpet of tin, was suspended by the door of the chiente, in order that the females might have recourse to it, at need. ”

“ The planets and moon join the sun and stars in the daily parade past our meridian, but their apparent movements are not entirely an illusion, for they have motions of their own that somewhat affect the precision of their daily revolution. ”

“ As the earth turns from west to east, the places or meridians to the eastward are first favored with the sun’s light, and those meridians cross this body before those to the westward. The sun apparently moves from the eastward to the westward, crossing each meridian in succession until in a few hours it is afternoon for places to the eastward and noon with us. ”

“ The great circle of the celestial sphere everywhere equally distant from both the zenith and the nadir is the horizon. It is plain that a new zenith and new horizon are created with every movement of the observer. The facts that man is on the surface and not at the center of the earth, and that his eye is elevated above its surface, each creates another horizon. ”

“ The azimuth of a body is its angular distance from the north or south points of the horizon, determined by the angle formed at the zenith, or by the arc of the horizon between the meridian of the observer and the vertical circle passing through the body. ”

“ The meridians extend from pole to pole, and it matters not what parallel you may be on, whether north or south latitude, your distance can always be measured to the Greenwich meridian in arc or time precisely as well as though you were on the exact parallel of Greenwich itself. ”

“ A flashing light is one in which the flash is of less duration than the eclipse, while an occulting light has an eclipse equal to or less than the period of light. Flashes and eclipses are often grouped and receive the name of group flashing or group occulting. ”

The moon is our nearest neighbor in the heavens; in fact, she is a satellite, that is, revolves around the earth. This movement is from west to east at an average rate of 51 minutes each day. ”

Now, if we try a similar voyage eastward around the earth, we will be setting the clock ahead 24 minutes each day, and when the anchor is dropped on our return, we will discover that it is Friday instead of Saturday. ”

“ In fact, Mercury is so close that it is unavailable, owing to the brilliancy of the sun, for observation with a sextant; while Venus, on the other hand, a little more remote, is an excellent body to observe, and is always found in the east or west, conveniently near the prime vertical, the most favorable place for a time sight for longitude. ”

The earth immediately moves out of line by virtue of its onward motion, and the sun correspondingly appears to move eastward ”

“ The vertical circle passing through the east and west points is called the prime vertical, and has a distinction above other vertical circles by virtue of its being the most favorable position for a body in observations for longitude. The heavens are further swept by an infinite number of parallels of altitude which are, as their name implies, parallel to the horizon. ”
