Ammonium nitrate

Definition and stakes

Julius Stieglitz,  The Elements of Qualitative Chemical Analysis…

“ Ammonium nitrate solution is most frequently available in qualitative analysis, because neither the ammonium-ion nor the nitrate-ion tends to interfere with the subsequent examination of the solution. When chloride-ion is not likely to interfere, ammonium chloride may be used. Thus, the sulphides of the arsenic, copper and zinc groups are washed with solutions containing ammonium nitrate (the [p137] chloride may be used for the zinc group288) rather than with pure water (or pure hydrogen sulphide water288) . ”

Henley's Twentieth Century Formulas…

“ II.—Calcium nitrate, ammonium nitrate, potassium sulphate, magnesium phosphate, iron chloride (or sulphate) (sodium silicate) .
It is well known that in nature nitrates are formed wherever decomposition of organic nitrogenous substances takes place in the air, the ammonia formed by the decomposition being oxidized to nitric acid. These conditions for the formation of nitrates are present in nearly every cornfield, and they are also the cause of the presence of nitrates in water that has its source near stables, etc.

Stanley Isaac Levy,  The Rare Earths: Their Occurrence…

“ Finally, since ammonium nitrate is formed in the reaction, a very thorough washing is necessary to remove this salt.

It would be impossible to mention all of the numberless proposals which have been put forward for fixing; nor are the great majority worthy of mention. [538] One of the most important was that of Albrecht, [539] by which hydrogen peroxide is substituted for ammonia. This reagent, as is well known, precipitates from solutions of thorium salts ‘peroxide’ compounds (vide p. 255) ; from the fabric impregnated with the nitrate, free nitric acid is liberated in the reaction.
