Anabolism

Definition and stakes

Various,  Popular Science Monthly (1890)

“ The theory of reproduction which the authors advance is that there is a continual see-saw between anabolism and katabolism, nutrition and reproduction. Growth of cell and of organism alike has a limit which, as stated by Spencer, depends on the tendency of increase of mass to outrun increase of surface. When anabolism threatens to pass this limit, katabolism acts and restores the preponderance of surface. Reproduction is continually going on in organic nature, because on the whole the katabolic conditions of the environment preponderate over the anabolic. ”

“ In anabolism, the dead, inert proteids, fats, and carbohydrates are more or less assimilated and made a part of the living matter of the tissue cells, while at the same time a certain amount of the food material, probably the larger amount, is simply stored as such, or left to circulate in the blood and lymph, without being raised to the higher level of living protoplasm. ”

“ There is close interconnexion between the two aspects of the double activity that in physiological theory constitute the chemical life of protoplasm, between dissimilation and assimilation. Hering has long insisted on a self-regulative adjustment of the cell metabolism, so that action involves reaction, increased catabolism necessitates after-increase of anabolism. The long-continued incitement to catabolism of the waking day thus of itself predisposes the nerve cells towards rebound into the opposite phase ”
