“ No man becomes a true Chela who has not given up all worldly objects and finally determined to devote all his efforts, and concentrate all his hopes, in what faute de mieux, I may call, spiritual development. All Chelas are bound by vows and conditions, over and above those of ordinary initiates of low grade. No Chela would, I may almost say can deceive his Guru, in whom centre all his hopes of advancement ; no teacher will take on the Chela cast off by another. What a real Chela says to his Guru you may accept as the absolute truth, so far as the speaker is concerned. ”

“ There is still a differential element present in the regular tapering of the chela and the presence of a greater number of smaller teeth in the American type, both features recalling P. bilobus. As the Devonic beds at Campbellton are believed to correspond in their facies and age to the Old Red sandstone of Europe, the similarity with P. anglicus is quite suggestive. Probably with larger collections this species may prove to be a vicarious form of the British type.

In Eurycide, Ascorhynchus, and Barana they are usually less atrophied, but yet comparatively small and with imperfect chelae, while in some Ascorhynchi (A. minutus, Hoek) they are reduced to stumps.

“ Next we have shelah, which may be identical with Hind. selā, which Platts connects with Skt. chela, chaila, 'a piece of cloth,' and defines as "a kind of scarf or mantle (of silk, or lawn, or muslin; usually composed of four breadths depending from the shoulders loosely over the body: it is much worn and given as a present, in the Dakkhan) ; silk turban." In the Deccan it seems to be worn by men (Herklots, Qanoon-e-Islam, Madras reprint, 18) . The Madras Gloss. gives sheelay, Mal. shīla, said to be from Skt. ”

The Chellean industry [43] , with the typical coarsely flaked almond-shaped implements, occurs abundantly in the South of England and in France, less commonly in Belgium, Germany, Austria-Hungary and Russia, while examples have been recognised in Palestine, Egypt, Somaliland, Cape Colony, Madras and other localities, though outside Europe the date is not always ascertainable and the form is not an absolute criterion [44] . ”

“ CHILAS, a hill village in the North-West Frontier Province of India. It is dominated by a fort on the left bank of the Indus, about 50 m. below Bunji, 4100 ft. above sea-level. It was occupied by a British force early in 1893, when a determined attack was made on the place by the Kohistanis from the Indus valley districts to the south-west, aided by contingents from Darel and Tangir west of Gilgit and north of the Indus. ”
