Epizootic

Definition and stakes

James Law,  Text book of veterinary medicine… (1902)

“ They are infectious when transmitted, not alone by contact but through the atmosphere. They are epizootic because they tend to attack animals generally or a given genus or family of animals generally when these are exposed to the infection. They are enzootic when confined to the animals in a given locality, the soil or conditions of which are favorable to the preservation of the germ in pathogenic potency, or to the production of a special susceptibility in the animal system. ”

E. R. Stitt,  The diagnostics and treatment of tropical diseases (1922)

“ It is always well to combine flea destruction with rat extermination because, as rats are reduced in numbers, there are fewer hosts, so that man is more liable to infection with fleas deprived of a sufficient number of rat hosts.
This may explain why a high death rate among rats, as the result of a plague epizootic, may act as a factor in the outbreak of human plague.
