“ Remembering thus, as a general rule, how many conditions require to have met before a fossil can have been both formed and preserved, we must conclude that the geological record is probably as imperfect in itself as are our opportunities of reading even the little that has been recorded. ”

“ Explanation of this is that plant and animal tissues quickly decay under ordinary conditions when life ceases. Unless protected from destructive agencies which are especially active at the surface of the ground, even the heavier bones of animals and the large trunks of fallen trees will soon crumble into shapeless masses. The usual method employed by nature to prepare a fossil specimen is so closely related to the natural process of rock making that a little knowledge of that subject will be necessary in order to know what fossils are and how they are preserved for so long a time. ”

“ They denote the age of the rocks at the beginning of each period. The age of a plant or animal which lived in Eocene time would be, according to this scale, somewhere between 35 million and 60 million years. In practice it is usually possible to determine whether a fossil was embedded in the rocks during an early or late portion of the period, and thus its age may be established within a shorter range, but it is impossible to be exact, even in terms of millions of years, with regard to anything as far back in prehistory as the Eocene period. ”

“ The striking feature of life development in the Cenozoic era is the great progress and expansion over the earth of the mammalian races. The division of the era into periods, however, was based largely on a study of fossil mollusks. In the Paris basin of France, it was noticed by the geologists of a century ago that the youngest of the sedimentary beds contained the greatest number of recent or still living species. Successively downward into the older beds the percentage of recent species decreased until there were practically no living species represented in the oldest rocks of the series. ”

“ Some of the larger and better known plants of past ages are shown as reconstructed by artists. Finer details of the reconstructions often have to be neglected because of uncertainties due to the scattered and fragmentary character of the fossil record. ”

“ Isolated patches of fossil-bearing sediments frequently record the migration of animals in unmistakable terms, but the details of the wanderings and the conditions encountered in the newly established habitats are often left in doubt. To correlate the facts revealed at one locality with findings at other places and, if possible, to date all prehistoric events with a greater degree of accuracy are among the major tasks of current investigations. ”

“ With one accord paleontologists of our time regard the question of the introduction of new species as solved. As Professor Marsh has said, "to doubt evolution today is to doubt science; and science is only another name for truth."
Thus the third great battle over the meaning of the fossil records has come to a conclusion. Again there is a truce to controversy, and it may seem to the casual observer that the present stand of the science of fossils is final and impregnable. But does this really mean that a full synopsis of the story of paleontology has been told? ”

“ It should be understood first that a fossil is some record, commonly preserved in rock, of a kind of plant or animal which no longer exists 6 as a living type. This, at least, is the ordinary sense of the word and more elaborate definitions are of small service to anyone. It may be necessary to add, however, that all things which have lived at any time are regarded as either plants or animals. ”

“ A few beds of Archeozoic age remain in nearly their original condition, but they are either without fossils or they have produced very questionable and unsatisfactory specimens. The existence of life during these early stages of earth history is indicated largely by chemical rather than fossil evidence. Much of the ancient limestone has been converted into marble, but it is not unreasonable to believe that plants and animals were instrumental in the production of this type of rock as they are today. ”

“ The fleshy parts of animals do not petrify.
(3) Many animals among the invertebrates use mineral substances for protective or supporting structures. Small plants of various kinds follow a similar practice. These structures, being produced in stony materials, are readily converted into fossils. The shells of mollusks are the best known illustrations in this field, and all that is required for a shell to become a fossil is the extinction of the species of animal that produced it. Fossils of this type are extremely abundant. ”

“ Lastly, looking not to any one time, but to all time, if my theory be true, numberless intermediate varieties, linking most closely all the species of the same group together, must assuredly have existed; but the very process of natural selection constantly tends, as has been so often remarked, to exterminate the parent forms and the intermediate links. Consequently evidence of their former existence could be found only amongst fossil remains, which are preserved, as we shall in a future chapter attempt to show, in an extremely imperfect and intermittent record. ”

“ The older the rock, the simpler the plant and animal life it contains. Thus fossils can give a clue to the age of the rock strata.
Fossils can teach history. They tell us about plants and animals that are now extinct—the dinosaur, for example. They can also tell of ancient climates. Coral found in rocks in Greenland suggests it must have once been warm. Remains of fir and spruce trees have been found in the tropics.
How are fossils formed? Teeth, bone and wood don't last long in their original state. However, buried materials decompose, leaving a film of carbon as a fossil. ”

“ Below the oldest known fossiliferous rocks, there must have been thousands of feet of sedimentary material, which has either been altered beyond recognition, or31 from some cause or other does not form part of our present geological record. ”

“ Since plants and animals changed through time and because their remains are found throughout the world, it is possible to erect a worldwide time scale based upon animal and plant evolution. In short, the fossils found in particular rock are characteristic representatives of the life at the time that rock originated and the fossils 6 found could have been entombed only at that time. One stratum, therefore, would have a total fossil assemblage quite different from the stratum above or below. ”

“ Such facts by no means invalidate the general rule, that certain fossils are good chronological tests of geological periods; but they serve to caution us against attaching too much importance to single species, some of which may have a wider, others a more confined vertical range. We have before seen that, in the successive tertiary formations, there are species common to older and newer groups, yet these groups are distinguishable from one another by a comparison of the whole assemblage of fossil shells proper to each. ”

“ No fossils have contributed more to this kind of information, than those of shells, and as the mineralized species could not be satisfactorily studied, except by accurately comparing them with those which now inhabit our seas and continents; the search for shells, has become, from a simple amusement, the study of scientific men—or, as a writer remarks, "it was only after the period when it was perceived that geology and ancient zoology were destined to be enlightened by their fossil remains, that this research passed from the hands of amateurs into those of naturalists." ”

“ But hardly more than two centuries have elapsed since this fundamental problem was first exhaustively treated; it was only in the last century that the archaeological value of fossils—their importance, I mean, as records of the history of the earth—was fully recognised; the first adequate investigation of the fossil remains of any large group of vertebrated animals is to be found in Cuvier's "Recherches sur les Ossemens Fossiles," completed in 1822 ”

“ He discovered that the fossils in rocks, instead of being scattered haphazard, are arranged in regular systems, so that any given stratum of rock is labelled by its fossil population; that the order of succession of such groups of fossils is always the same in any vertical series of strata in which they occur, and The new geology that a fossil, having once disappeared, never reappears in a later stratum. ”

“ Hence, points neither of difference nor of resemblance, from age to age, are absolute, and cannot very minutely be applied as regards the several formations and their organic contents. The types of one formation are repeatedly mingled with those of another. And the value of all the evidence collected from fossil remains, while it establishes undeniably a succession in the mineral deposits, leaves the question as to the limits of the epochs, and their relation to Time, still partially [292] undetermined. ”

“ Fossils provide important clues to the ages of the rocks in which they are found. The slow evolution of living things through geologic time can be traced by a systematic study of fossils. The fossils are then used to determine the relative ages of the rocks that contain them and to establish a geologic time scale that can be applied to fossil-bearing rocks throughout the world. Figure 18 shows the major subdivisions of the last 600 million years of geologic time and some forms of life that dominated the scene during each of these intervals. ”

“ When we inquire what constitutes a good species for any given period, we have reason to believe that many names in our lists represent merely varietal forms or erroneous determinations. This is the case even in the modern flora; and in fossil floras, through the poverty of specimens, their fragmentary condition, and various states « 260 » of preservation, it is still more likely to occur. Every revision of any group of fossils detects numerous synonyms, and of these many are incapable of detection without the comparison of large suites of specimens. ”

“ Primarily concerned, therefore, with fixing the age of strata, it is easy to understand how geologists have been content with a special kind of palaeontology which is out of touch with the methods of systematic zoology or botany. On the other hand, the botanist whose observations and researches have not extended beyond the limits of existing plants, sees in the vast majority of fossil forms merely imperfect specimens, which it is impossible to determine with any degree of scientific accuracy. He prefers to wait for perfect material ”

“ This has been to a great extent dredged from the rivers; and thus remains of Pleistocene and of Tertiary animals have been mixed indiscriminately together. It is often impossible to determine to what formation a fossil may belong. To add to the difficulty of the palæontologist, the vertebrate remains are sometimes found washed out and mingled with bones or teeth of what appear to have been domestic animals. ”

“ Nevertheless, looking to a remotely future epoch, there can be little doubt that all the more modern marine formations, namely, the upper pliocene, the pleistocene and strictly modern beds of Europe, North and South America, and Australia, from containing fossil remains in some degree allied, and from not including those forms which are found only in the older underlying deposits, would be correctly ranked as simultaneous in a geological sense. ”

“ Fossils as Guides to Age of Strata.—
In passing from fossil deposits of fairly recent origin to those of older date, we find the proportion of living species gradually diminish, being replaced by forms now extinct. After this the genera themselves are replaced by more ancient types, and if we penetrate still deeper into the series of geological strata, even families and orders of animals and plants give place to others entirely unknown at the present day. ”

“ Thus, the same fossil, occurring in successive groups of strata, and with the merely trivial and varietal differences due to the gradual change in its environment, has been repeatedly described as a distinct species, with a distinct name, in every bed in which it was found. We know, however, that many fossils range vertically through many groups of strata, and there are some which even pass through several formations. The mere fact of a difference of physical position ought never to be taken into account at all in considering and determining the true affinities of a fossil. ”

“ He replied, that, in one respect, the regularity is surprising, for they are found, as it were, in families; each formation containing a collection of species often peculiar to itself, and differing widely from those of the adjoining one; so that at any two points, in similar formations, however distant, we are sure of meeting the same general assemblage of fossil remains. For instance, if the fossils found in the chalk of Flamborough Head in Yorkshire, or in the cliffs of Dover, or even in{250} Poland, or Paris, be examined, eight or nine species out of ten will be found to be the same. ”

“ It has been determined by collecting and systematically studying the remains of this ancient life that they bear testimony to a long, unbroken history in which the forms of both animals and plants have been greatly altered. The more ancient remains are simple in structure, and form with the later ones, a series that exhibits a gradually increasing complexity of structure. The study of the fossil series has brought about a very great extension of our knowledge regarding the age of the world and of the conditions under which life was evolved. ”
