Magazine (building)

Definition and stakes

Various,  The Builder, No. 2, February 18… (1844)

“ You invite a reply from your readers of the ‘Builder’s Magazine.’
“To make a newspaper answer, it must be numerously circulated. I should advise to make it a weekly paper, to suit every mechanic or person engaged in the trade. I should recommend that it be like the Illustrated London News, to contain sketches of works in progress, new buildings, amounts of contracts, and other news relating to building. Also, to make it general (for nearly every workman takes a weekly paper) , it must contain the heads of the news for the week.

The Harmsworth Magazine,  The Harmsworth Magazine, v. 1, 1898-1899

“ We are enabled to issue a threepenny Magazine containing more expensive literary matter, more numerous pictures, and more pages than the sixpenny Magazines of a few months back, at so ridiculous a price, because this Magazine is only a small incident in an organization controlling four daily journals and nearly thirty weekly periodicals; because we already possess and are now building printing machinery of an entirely novel and labour-saving nature. ”

Portrait of Frederick Swartwout Cozzens Frederick Swartwout Cozzens,  Fitz-Greene Halleck: A Memorial (1868)

“ As time rolls on, Posterity rakes among the ashes of the Past for some live coals of genius, but it never disturbs the dust of critics. A magazine a month old is very old indeed. It is true, that some undiscriminating persons invoke the aid of the book-binder, and preserve these volumes,—persons with palatial residences, and a yawning chaos of shelves in that part of the mansion which the architect has set apart—The Library. ”
