Portrait of Barry Pain Barry Pain,  In a Canadian Canoe; The Nine Muses Minus One… (1898)

So Bill had been turned out, and now sat with his feet in a delightful puddle, reflecting for a minute or two on dead babies, injustice, puddles, and other things. But a puddle is of no use to any one who has not got something to float on it.

Portrait of Elihu Burritt Elihu Burritt,  Walks in the Black Country and its Green Border-Land… (1868)

“ To an outsider looking into one of those sixty furnaces, and seeing, if his eyes would bear it, the boiling, bubbling mass of metal, ten times more than red hot, a puddle would sound too wet and watery to describe it. The puddlers who fish in the troubled fountain, are generally stripped to the waist, and flooded with perspiration. They fish out a mass at the end of the rod, of a weight which shows what athletes they are trained to be. ”
