“ The schismatic generally has had no education, and has learned no theology at all. As a simple test of this, ask priests in the Levant about the great questions which lie beneath their differences, about Nestorianism, Monophysism, the idea of the Church and the Papacy. You will not find one Uniate who is not able to give you a general, fairly accurate, if perhaps rather old-fashioned statement on these points, and a defence of what he believes. You will find few schismatics who know anything about them at all, who even know what these questions mean. ”

I leave it among the divines to dilate upon the danger of schism, as a spiritual evil ”
