Bacillus anthracis

Definition and stakes

James Law,  Text book of veterinary medicine… (1902)

“ Nothing is more certain than that the disease is due to the introduction into the blood or tissues of the bacillus anthracis or its spores. These microbes are always found in the anthrax lesions and in the blood of the victim in the advanced stages. When grown in bouillon cultures to the hundredth generation they retain their virulence unabridged and determine the same lesions in the animals inoculated. When the infecting culture has been passed through a Pasteur filter the virulence is lost with the removal of the bacilli. ”

the United States Senate,  Riegle Report (1994)

“ Let me spell them out, and these are medical terms, but it is important they be on the record - so the people know it, and so researchers can compare the illnesses we are now seeing with the effects of exposure to these particular items.
The first one is bacillus anthracis, or anthrax as it is called, which is a disease-producing bacteria identified by the Department of Defense in `The Conduct of the Persian Gulf War: Final Report to Congress,` as being a major component in the Iraqi biological warfare program.
Anthrax is an often-fatal infectious disease caused by ingestion of anthrax spores.

Portrait of Stephen Paget Stephen Paget,  Experiments on Animals

“ Happily, the disease is very rare among men, even among those most exposed to it. For its treatment in man, an antitoxin has been used with some success: but the cases are too few to be of much importance. [15]
The bacillus anthracis was first seen more than fifty years ago: "Anthrax has the distinction of being the first infectious disease the bacterial nature of which was definitely proven."
