Cattle pen

Definition and stakes

Various,  Harper's Round Table, August 25…

“ The cattle may stampede, the steer or cow may run, double, stick like a burr to the herd, but the clever little pony, cool and keen, heads her off, turns her round, cuts her out, and finally drives her triumphantly into the open, where she can be roped, or into a pen. He separates a cow from her calf, cuts out a steer without even disturbing the others, and uses as much judgment as an experienced man. The cow-puncher gives him his head after the steer has once been selected, and only holds his lasso in readiness to rope him when he has been successfully cut out from the bunch. ”

“ There were many men at the work, and after all the cows and calves had been cut into a separate herd, the other cattle were turned loose. Then with great shoutings the cows were started up the river to a branding-pen several miles distant. Never during his life did the line-back calf forget that day. There was such a rush and hurrah among these horsemen that long before they reached the corrals the line-back’s tongue lolled out, for he was now a very fat calf. Only once did he even catch sight of his speckled playmate, who was likewise trembling like a fawn. ”

“ One man stands in each of these pens, into the first of which are thrown about 40 sheep. The man keeps them moving about with his hands, to prevent them from drowning, and then lets them swim into the adjoining soaking pen, where that man does the same. He merely keeps them moving. They then swim out of this, where six men are standing and where each sheep passes through the hands of each of the six men, so that it has six good washings, until when they squeeze the wool the water comes off quite clean. ”
