“ Exhaust System. The exhaust system consists of muffler and tailpiece assembly, front exhaust pipe assembly, and rear exhaust pipe. Exhaust pipe ends are a slip fit in cylinder exhaust ports.
76. AIR CLEANER (figs. 46 and 47) . a. General. Air cleaner should not be submerged in water, nor should high‐pressure stream be directed into cleaner louvers (where air enters on rear of body) when cleaning vehicle. Either water or dirt entering air cleaner in excessive quantities will raise the oil level in oil cup and choke off proper air supply to carburetor.

“ As the piston moves rapidly up the cylinder on the exhaust stroke it pushes the gases in front of it out through the exhaust opening, but when it gets to the top of its stroke the piston stops and then comes down again for the suction stroke, whereas the gases will tend to keep on moving if they are not unduly restricted in their passage through the exhaust system, so that we can generally obtain some slight advantage by giving the exhaust valve a small amount of lag in closing. ”

“ The two systems are sometimes distinguished by calling one a pressure system and the other an exhaust system. These terms are very misleading, for an exhaust system is a pressure system. The current of air is kept flowing in a tube by maintaining a difference of pressure at the two ends, and the result is the same whether we raise the pressure at one end above the atmospheric or lower it at the other below the atmospheric. ”
