Indentation

“ Spelling, capitalization and punctuation must be correct. If the original is prose, insist upon proper paragraphing; if poetry, upon exactness in the arrangement of the lines, especially in the matter of indentation. Children will quickly see the relation that indentation bears to rhymes. By following with exactness, the child learns unconsciously to observe the general rules. By occasionally calling attention to the reasons for forms, children are taught to act intelligently and [361] to decide for themselves when they come to original composition. ”

Basic use
{{text-indent|CSS unit|text}} For a single shorter run of text containing no characters that are significant in wikicode (equals signs in particular) , you can use the inline calling convention: the amount of indentation is given in the first parameter, and the text to which it is to be applied in the second. For most use cases though, the block calling convention is strongly recommended.

“ If the continuation of the prose writing does not call for a new paragraph, the next line of prose text begins without indention.
5. When a prose quotation is introduced, it should be treated as in Rule 4 if it contains more than a single sentence; otherwise it is “run in,” with the proper quotation-marks and punctuation.
6. There are different forms of indention in typography which are used for different purposes, viz.:
Irregular indention.— For this form of in­den­tion there are no spec­i­fied rules, and it is used prin­ci­pal­ly in cer­tain styles of po­et­ry and in dis­play work. ”

“ Minor elements of the page may contribute beauty or ugliness according to their handling: the headline and page number, their character and position; notes marginal or indented, footnotes; chapter headings and initials; catch-words; borders, head and tail pieces, vignettes, ornamental rules. “ It is much better practice in printing to put such matter in smaller type than the type of the main text; or, if in type-written manuscript, to identify it by less space between its lines than is used between the lines preceding and following it, or by indenting the lines of the quotation more than the regular paragraph indention. Quotations thus identified need no quotation-marks. ”

for line endings within a block of text and then outdent, hanging indent &c. work. Beeswaxcandle (talk) 01:24, 19 August 2013 (UTC) Um... a hanging indent assumes the text will wrap, but a poem tag assumes it won't. Either you want the text to wrap or you don't, so there should never be a time those two formatting items are used together on the same text. Just start the poem tag near the bottom, with the block where it's appropriate, instead of trying to get the line breaks in specific locations for the first several paragraphs. ”
