All the essential parts of the middle ear—the tympanic membrane, tympanic cavity, and Eustachian tube—develop from the first gill-opening with its surrounding parts, which in the Primitive Fishes (Selachii) remains throughout life as an open blowhole, situated between the first and second gill-arches. In the embryos of higher Vertebrates it closes in the centre, the point of concrescence forming the tympanic membrane. The remaining outer part of the first gill-opening is the rudiment of the outer ear-canal.

Alimentary Canal.
A protrusible tongue is never developed in Fishes. A rudiment of that organ is present in the Elasmobranchs (Fig. 153) and Dipnoi, and also in the Crossopterygii, and usually consists of an elevated area of mucous membrane provided with free lateral edges and a forwardly projecting apex; it is supported by the basi-hyal element of the hyoid arch. In the Crossopterygii (e.g. Polypterus) the tongue contains muscle fibres, and in the Dipnoi, where the organ is better developed than in any other Fishes, special lingual muscles are present.

In such birds the keel appears as a very slightly raised ridge that forms a distinct line on the palate. The bill at this time has reached about three-fourths of the length attained when the bird is adult, so that the beginning of this ridge appears to be located far forward, though it occupies the same position in relation to the external nasal opening that the fully developed keel does in the adult. In the dried skins the ridge is somewhat indistinct, but it is possible that it may be more readily apparent in living or recently killed specimens.
